my buddys pho restaurant took seafood off of the menu last month.. the price fluctuated and went up too much to keep it... I like eating there but the rice sucks and he only makes goodies like banh coun for the employees or me occasionaly.. I wish there was a place that served hom mali rice.... the rice here in the states has no taste...

You are just not getting the right rice. We of course have a VN store not far away and make our own often but my friends place I mentioned has good rice. Most rice though is tasteless here. It does help that we have a huge VN population in the area.

I have the good stuff at home, but even the vn restaurants here have the lame stuff. I like eating out from time to time... I swear most of the US has never has any good rice to east ever...

the people that came up with that top dog list have a limited amount of experience to say best in the US .... I can say for sure the best rice comes from SE asia...

I wonder what a asian 5 spice hotdog would taste like...

I have to agree that Asia has the best rice but that rice from India is pretty good.

I remember when I had been in Korea for about 2 years and all over Asia. I came home and ate some rice and it was not only tasteless but stuck in my throat.

There is an indian place close by that uses cheap rice, but they put those caraway seeds in the rice when they cook it and that adds a nice twist... I'm glad that place isnt close to home because I could spend a bunch of money eating there on a regular basis and gain a bunch of weight... great food!

I would love to eat a HotDog while strolling the streets of VN. Is there ANY American Cafes there? C'mon, guys, help a brother out!

As a matter of fact I have heard of a specific cafe there.innocent.gif

We have to be careful though or the VN forum policeman will come and get us.

Hey, I'm trying to get the forum back on topic by blending these seemingly bipolar topics.

Just where can I find a good hotdog in Vietnam?! :protest:

Loi brought up a good point.. how would A hotdog shop go over in a VN neighborhood in Houston or OC? I can see them selling well in VN, but with different toppings...

Anh Scotts, Vnese from OC loves In-And-Out hamburger. Most vnese 2nd generation would love to eat something esle beside Vnese's foof, from home or in the OC restaurant, pho, com, bun, and etc. I think will be serve well in OC. For the toppings just add an exchange Soy sauce, fish sauce with little spicy.. hihihih..:rofl::rofl:

Mr. Loi,

Open up a seafood restaurant in little saigon. Those type of places always make a lot of money. Look at boiling crab, you open up a place where all the men can "nhau" and you can make a lot of money selling alcohol along with seafood. If you make it a nhau place you can make more money on the beer and alcohol than on the seafood. That will beat all the pho restaurants at every corner.:thumbs:

Dai,

It's not good ideas to open a "quan nhau" Bar in OC, and you know why????? Seafood restaurant is also a bad business, since we have so many here, from OC to LA, China Town, Alhambra, Montery Park. Seafood restaurant all over the place. Boiling crab starting a good business in OC, and always busy everyday, and night.. very good business.....

Were you equally offended by the 3 week long exchange about basketball in the "Lakers v Celtics" thread? Or questions about The Big Grill?

Troi Oi (OMG) Anh Map oi!!! :ot: Please leaves me out of this. :bonk::bonk::bonk: My thread is not only "Lakers VS Celtis" and also Hat Cho Nhau Nghe.

:ot2:

I do love HotDog, but sorry HotDog from VN is making me very SICKS, and the cost like $3.

I have absolutely no palette when it comes to Asian food. I couldn't tell great rice from Uncle Ben's. The only time I know rice isn't good is if it crunches when I bite it. I find most rice to be utterly tasteless. Phuong mixes oatmeal with the rice when she makes 'chau' for breakfast because she knows I don't want to eat something that reminds me of tasteless runny tapioca. Fortunately, she also likes oatmeal, and she's even developed a taste for grits!

There are plenty of Asian markets around here. Phuong buys "three ladies" brand rice, which comes from Thailand.

Ok, I know the lady on the left is Thai, and the one in the middle is Vietnamese, but I'm confused about the one on the right. Phuong says she's Laotian. Anybody know for sure?

I saw an interview last week with the guy from Thailand that found that tasty Hom Mali rice over 50 years ago and brought it to the government as a young researcher. it was being grown in a small village and only the locals knew about it..... since then it has spread in production accross SE asia and become the signature of Thai rice production...

Difficult to say where #3 is from.... Jim you may not taste the difference but good rice has such a clean nutty note when it is steaming... uncle bens smells like water boiling... after eating the good stuff now for months, you may notice a difference if someone cooks the cheap stuff...

hot dog hot dog.... ;)

Special Rules

Topics in the Regional Forums area can contain the following (without being moved):

--o General discussion on issues relating to that relevant region

--o Immigration Discussion of topics specific to that region (ex: special embassy procedures, help on finding local doctors, etc)

--o Off Topic Discussion intended to be of interest to the specific regional forum participants (cultural discussion, local food, travel, etc)

Know what you are talking about before you try to control what we discuss here... been down this road before with you and not going there again... if you dont like what we discuss here in this specific topic.. ignore it... nobody is forcing you to post to this topic or read it for that matter... stirring up ####### and provoking confrontation as you are so inclined to do, causes more people to avoid the forums than anything else... let it go and let us enjoy being able to talk about what we want to talk about...

I do know what I am talking about before I speak, this is VIETNAM forum, nothing local about a New England Hot dog place to it. I have also already talked to admins about it, they TOTALLY agreed that this was OFF TOPIC, and should never have been in this forum, but..... The topic has changed and things have been placed in that are about VIETNAM (cultural discussion, local food, travel, ect.) Before you start calling me a cry baby, or thinking I was complaining about your babes business Lucky, read my words, I said I did not really care about this topic, I just simply felt it was way OFF TOPIC, since it was about New England Hot Dogs, and NOTHING to do about Vietnam, Scott later added that he had a friend that was linked to this company. I did like your post about your hair shop, and it did show the progress that your wife has made, and that was very justified to being in this forum. Like me or hate me, I really don't care, I am here to try and help people, and if that means stepping on people's toes in the process, I am all for that. This topic has started to be more Vietnamese specific lately with people asking about where to get a hot dog while in Vietnam.

On a different note, I think it is truly funny that when someone has a complaint or a different view that some people do not agree with how that person becomes the VJ police, and a cry baby, remember people this is a public forum where peoples opinions do matter, and people can and do not always have to agree with one another.

On a final note, there are a few places in back packer area in that do sell hot dogs, I have yet to try one, and maybe it is not the same type of hot dog an American would call a Hot Dog, but they are called that here. I am just not an avid hot dog lover so I have yet to try one. Jerome

Does Al Fresco's in Saigon serve hot dogs? I know they have hamburgers. Most of their food only somewhat resembles western food. Their enchiladas are made with flour tortillas, and sprinkled with a little cheese and salsa. They're a little dry, and don't resemble enchiladas I've ever eaten in the US or Mexico. Their hamburgers are overcooked and rubbery - is the cook boiling the meat, or is he the same guy who makes microwave burgers for 7-11?
