Seeking couples for friendship

Hello All,

I am looking for Ukrainian/Russian couples for friendship:

If you live in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania or Connecticut, that would be perfect as we are looking for friends that are “reasonably” close to us in western New Jersey near Easton Pennsylvania. If you are heavy drinkers, heavy smokers, or do drugs, it is not a good match.

Ideally looking for American (or from any country) men with Ukrainian/Russian/Eastern European women (or any woman who knows Russian and English), living in America.

If this is not you but you know someone, please let them know.

Thank you.

Alla is constantly talking on the phone and/or on Skype with Russian women (and some approved men!) that are here in the states. She would be happy to add another to the mix just to talk with/share ideas/suggestions, etc.

As far and you and I becoming friends, that depends.....What kind of guns do you own/like to shoot? and What kinds of pie are you fond of?

And as far as getting together, occassionally I'm over that way at a dog show and we will be doing some camping excursions to the right coast.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

I will restate a word of caution here about seeking Russian speaking friends. We have talked here before about how the Russian speakers who did not arrive via K visas can sometimes bear a little animosity towards those who did. Just be careful of the folks you run into at the Russian store, or the ever popular "I know a Russian guy who will do that work for less". Sometimes a shared language is not an indication of friendship or shared interests, especially if there is a big age difference, or money involved.

The problem is that regardless of the issue, for a new immigrant from the FSU, the opinion or advice of another Russian speaker seems to have instant credibility. We are past that stuff now, but had some lively discussions early on. After all, why would I know anything about how my country works, right? Be patient, and be cautious.

Good advice Brad,

I surley want her to make her own group of friends, but I intend to emmerse her into full USA mode upon arrival. She has her Ukrainian friends and she will maintain contact im sure, some of those so called friends have shown their true colors since we have now moved forward in the visa process and they are none to thrilled to say the least. Much negetivity and resentment from some of them  it makes her sad because she has know them for many years. Even the parents of these people have shut her out. I really do not see a good reason to seek out a Ukrainian group of friends for her here. I am sure that community is small here where we will be living and maybe she will meet a few through ESL classes but chances are slim.

Why not let her just make new friends, nationality notwithstanding?

If you are doing your part of the bargain, she will not NEED friends, she'll have you. Aren't you her best friend?

Thank you all for replies and good advice. Of course I want to spend as much time with my fiancee and of course we are best friends! and true, of course, it doesn't have to be a Russian or Ukrainian couple for friendship. So, I understand all that!

I was just hoping to find a female friend or friends that Tatiana can spend some time with while I am at work during the day. Unfortunately, I commute to my job about 75 minutes one way (I leave at 5:10 in the morning and return at 7pm). There will be some days I will try to get home earlier and I am going to ask about working from home a few days a month. I realize a lot of the guys on VJ have plenty of money and free time but that is not my situation at this time.

Anyway, it seems this will be a much more difficult goal. There are many Ukrainians and Russians in the tri-state area but that doesn't mean they all would make "good" friends (as someone noted earlier).

There is an eastern Ukrainian Meetup group in Eastern Pennsylvania I think I will also try.

Many of us have too much of one and not enough of the other so our wives are actually like, "get the hell out of here and do something." She'll look back on those wonderful days of sitting there all day without you in fondness.

Or she'll b!tch you out about never spending any time with her.

Either way, you're wrong. Welcome to married life!

She will find Russian speaking and native English speaking friends.

Most of Alla's Russian speaking girlfriends are married to American men, there are a couple of "singles" and one couple that is "all Belurussian".

Now this time at work may be a problem. I hope it works well for you, I can tell you that it absolutely would not have for me. No way! In fact, even though my "full time" job is actually a "part time" job, I was also commuting an hour + each way and it simply did not work. We finally, earlier this year, moved to "the city" and life is much less hectic. I wish you luck.

Alla is also not the patient type. She is not going to wait until your next day off to get her SS card for example...we got that the day after she arrived. she had a drivers license in her hand 2 months after arriving and never had driven a car in her life. she started college classes 5 days after arriving and wanted to know why she had to wait 5 days!!!!!!! (2 days were weekend!) Maybe your fiancee is content to sit and wait weeks and weeks in order to get on with the tasks of life. I can just say it is a difficult time and it takes a LOT of your time to get all in order...in my case I also had a child to get enrolled in school, and another one to come later. My family STILL keeps me very busy and my employer gets no more than 20-25 hours per week from me and knows better than to ask for more!

I am not complaining, it is my joy in life to do things with and for my family. I would rather do just about anything with Alla or the boys than to do anything by myself. But it takes a lot of time. I suggest you make it a point to plan very carefully and make your fiancee aware of your plans and keep to that schedule. They expect that THEY are most important in your life and expect you to treat them as such. You will not be able to get SS cards, bank accounts, insurance policies, teach driving skills, enroll people in school, etc if you are gone from 5am to 7pm. Forget it. Plan your days. If you work Monday - Friday, how will you get into SS or the bank, for example? If she has to take an assessment test for ESL classes on Tuesday at 10am...etc. You will have to plan to use some days off during the week.

I wish you the best.

The work time (and so time spent apart) is going to be tough. Hook up the skype, buy some phone cards, and talk together every day about how she is doing. I know you get that last bit Tim, but for the record... The more contact she keeps back home, the less lonely she will feel, and early on she will have days where she feels lost. Call us any time.
