TEXAS: Dominating the Country As Usual In Being Almost Recession-Proof.

Texas is not "recession proof" anyone that says that was in diapers in the late 80s when the state turned into a ghost town, compared to good times. For now, it is good times again, but that can change. All glory is fleeting.

I was out of diapers by the late 80's but was still a young child when the savings and loan crisis hit. I didn't have a concept of money back then except for counting change and dollars in math class at elementary school. Looking back though my family lived in an upper middle class neighborhood in Houston around the block from the famous basketball player Hakeem Olajuwon. We didn't seem to be affected too much then nor the community around us. It didn't seem like a ghost town to me but maybe I was too young to tell.

The article of course fails to mention that we're friendly to business, have lower taxes than other parts of the country, lower cost of living, etc and you get the same ####### you get in NY/LA minus the congestion...

Eh, it is from Clintoon "news" network--which explains plenty.

And, as far as the ####### of LA/NY---there's far less of it in TX, a state I actually lived in for six months, and actually liked (and BTW, Dallas is far-more desi-friendly--especially if the desi is born-again Christian--than big-rotten-apple, San Fransicko or Lost Angeles).

(I really would like to return there--or to metro-Atlanta, GA--but God won't let me do so).

Have a look at these. Texas exports essential things like oil, fuel. Most of their top 25 exported things are either petroleum or derivative of petroleum. The demand for these around the world didn't drop. On the other than CA and NY export "services" and luxurious things; things that people can do without when the going gets tough. That's why NY/CA felt the blunt of the global recession. To mention, NY is the financial hub of the world. It stands to make sense that they’d be most affected. To somehow blame this on the politics of left vs. right is quite dishonest and absolutely moronic. Though I'm sure politics does influence the economy. NY and CA are far more in tuned with the world than TX. There's no mistaking that except in the rotten minds of Paul and his hordes.

Now, now, let’s get down to the fact of the matter. China’s economy boomed over the past few years. Their GDP keeps growing. And Saudi Arabia’s GDP also keeps growing and they didn’t feel the global recession that much. Shouldn’t Texas and America, by your logic, change republican form of government to monarchy or communism?

I’m quite perplexed at how shorted-sighted so many of you are. Do you really represent the population of my generation?

We would have $1 per gallon gasoline though, just as we did in the 80's...at Texas's expense. Texas was also one of the worst hit states in the great depression. The state is NOT recession proof and anyone believeing that is bound to repeat history.

I also remember by 1999 I could buy gas in Austin for less than a dollar a gallon. I could fill my whole tank for $10-$20. When I got to Idaho and the price of gas was higher and just kept going up getting as high as $5.00 a gallon during the surge in the Iraq war I was missing the lower gas prices I had back in Texas.

 everytime i've made the mistake of driving into the metroplex around rushhour the freeways are parking lots. one time i was driving a standard. :bonk: that will NEVER happen again. it took 30 minutes to drive a 1/4 mile....
In NY, that happens even when it is NOT rush-hour--as I observed once on GW Bridge from other side (Pras and I were visiting Edison) as a passenger ON A SUNDAY AT NOON! In Dallas, Sunday at noon is a breeze--and you have yourself to blame for not knowing the local bypasses! so :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

i was already :bonk: myself for driving a standard into that mess. my leg went numb from all the clutch pedal pushing. i don't live there so, why would i know the local bypasses? & why weren't the locals on them instead of parking infront of me? as for driving in LA or NY you couldn't pay me to do it. ask HAL. i flew to Chicago. just so i wouldn't have to drive in that mess up there. when we couldn't take the train & walk to the destination, we had to take a cab. almost every cab i got in, the driver was so stressed out & jittery. i wasn't sure if i should have just walked the 5-10 miles, so i'd make it alive....people can keep the big city congestion, i don't want any part of it.

The proofs in the pudding. The most liberal state are in the worst condition and the most conservative states are much better off.

Exactly. States with low taxes are doing better than high tax states. A no-brainer for most.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm glad some people are not getting hit by the recession, that's a good thing

As for the ideology crappola - well, what's to say? Presumably banning sodomy has economic advantages that I was previously unaware of ;)

I'm guessing you never read Bible (or maybe you read it and then forgot)--as it confirms that banning what God states as abomination does bring blessings.

I don't believe fairy tales. I don't believe god has any more influence on the economy of texas than it does on earthquakes in countries where woman wear t-shirts and shorts.

I honestly think that some of the people here are insane - they'd have to be - it would be much kinder than the alternative that they are ignorant morons without the sense to realise that they embarrass themselves whenever they set fingers to keyboard and propagate this rubbish.

So complex economic conditions across diverse parts of a diverse country can be boiled down to ideological disputes in party politics. It's no different to the "my dad can beat up your dad" ####### that you hear from primary school children in the playground.
