Say your SO needed some kind of organ transplant surgery and you were the only match. You have a 2% chance of survival, so in all likelihood you will die. Let's also assume that your SO has a 98% chance of survival if you go through with the surgery. So you'll essentially be sacrificing your own life so they can live.

Would you do it?

 I would gladly give my wife any organ she would require, including my nuts.

However the question is skewed to the point that if the person giving the donation

is going to die, medical ethics would prevent such a donation because it would

be tantamount to murder.

Sure, but let's assume that it's not an issue. The point is would you sacrifice your life for your SO with a tiny chance that you would survive (the organ transplant scenario is just an example).

Since this scenario is so detatched from reality, I'll put myself in that unreal situation and say yes.

What this thread needs is a few quotes from George Carlin:

“Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a long period of time.”

“Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things”

“Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity”

“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough.

It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death!

What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards.

You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home.

You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work.

You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement.

You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school.

You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play,

you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby,

you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating..."

This was actually a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald that became a Brad Pitt movie...

I might say yes if it weren't for the fact that I have a child. I never found death a scary idea before she came along. It's not really about being afraid of death. I just don't trust anyone to look after my child as well as me, even my husband.

I feel the same for the same reason (children). My answer would be "no".

This wouldn't be my decision to make alone. Believe it or not, my spouse would also have to be involved in any decision . There are many other variables to consider rather than the black and white death and life issue such as overal general health in other areas, ability to survive unassisted, willingness to take the risk to make a decision that might involve sacrificing one life for another. If I were actually faced with this scenario I have no idea what I would do until I had a chance to address all of the other issues involved as well - it just isn't that black and white.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I voted yes. But if my husband were alert during the decision making process, I think he would fight me hard to not do it and to let him be the one who dies. Let's pray we never face that!

Yes, because life would be too painful to endure without him. I'd rather pass away first.

I, too, would rather pass on before my husband, so if it meant that he would not make it without me donating an organ, I would definitely do it. There would always be that chance that we both made it!!!!
