I believe any general who runs 7 miles a day and eats once sets the standards for bullshit to be stopped. How can his troops complain when he too is doing the same thing they're doing?

You're passing it off as an OCD thing and making it appear as if he's an unstable person and somewhat of a nutter when in fact he could be doing it because he's setting an example for his troops. Empathy, no. Above reproach, quite possible.

That would be cool. They could say there were lasers in orbit that can cause earth quakes and hurricanes. A little maneuvering a tectonic plate here and there and you have an erupting volcano.

The situation with McChrystal reminds me of a historical situation which occured in India in 1959 (note: while India does have civilian-government control over armed forces, the chain of this command is less clear than in the US--perhaps due to the fact that the first POTUS had been a war-general). Then army chief K.S. Thimayya had criticised (deservedly as proven later) Defence Minister V.K.K. Menon for signing a contract to get jeeps for the army inferior to those desired by Thimayya; although Thimayya had not EXPLICITLY criticised Menon's boss (P.M. Nehru--again, there is no question such criticism would have been deserved, given the venal Nehru's disregard for the army), it may have been implied--Thimayya resigned, but his resignation was not accepted and he continued until he retired in 1960.

1962 proved Thima correct--when Menon's deficiency (and also Nehru's) were revealed through China's attack on India.
