I think they care about how much is in your husband's bank account because they want to see he has enough money to support you just incase he loses his job. That is why they want to see bank statement or letter. His income might be enough to support you, but they want to see the same in bank account. That is what most people are telling me. So as long as your husband got 15k or more in his bank account, you will be fine. He just needs to go to his bank and get a bank statement to show 15k or more in funds. Atleast you have some knowledge prior to your interview unlike us.

Goodluck to you and your husband :star:

Can the money in the bank account come from anywhere, or do you need to be able to show that it came from employment? Like, is it purely a numbers game and if the number is high enough then you're in? If it's money from student loans and/or grants, is that acceptable?

How recent was it? Days? Weeks? Months?

My joint sponsor is sort of in a similar situation and I'm worried...

Um, let's see. We went through NVC in February. He got hired end-Feb. Our interview was in mid-May. So about two and a half months.

Can the money in the bank account come from anywhere, or do you need to be able to show that it came from employment? Like, is it purely a numbers game and if the number is high enough then you're in? If it's money from student loans and/or grants, is that acceptable?

It doesn't necessarily have to be from employment but it should be from a documented source. If you have a large sum of money, say 25k, coming from seemingly nowhere it can look suspicious--i.e. you're getting paid by the beneficiary.

Oh... I wonder if they have some sort of official guidelines they use or if it's just up to the individual CO's discretion. I'm glad you guys were able to get a joint sponsor and that everything worked out!

MJ Woods, I dont know anything.Co just asked me to more funds on bank and I asked does it matter put this money long time ago or in a short time. She said " just deposit acc" thats all.She did not even look at my husband's letter of employement and pay stubs, It was last than 2 mins, she said everything fine. Except this. I dont know sounds like they are playing a game with us " approved you" after that " aaa sorry Actualy we were denied you" ... bla bla . I dont know anything. My husband gets angry cuz of the way of my thinking for this issue. But It could be just a trick for them to keep people away from their window. Ohoho you got approved but! you are missing something. If they are gonna say sorry " Icant" ..everybody will be angry at them and for sure will be some kind a fighting. I just hate that my future life with my husband hangs on sb' lips. I m just waiting right now for see what will happen. Hope everything will be fine for everybody. I do love my husband and whatever they do I will be with him in Usa or in Turkey! So

Absolutely upto the CO.

We did have a joint sponsor during NVC since my husband wasn't making enough during that period. He got a job before the interview and was making well over the guidelines, but since I figured it might not be enough I had another new joint sponsor lined up. (Old joint sponsor got cold feet and bailed out?--although I don't know who my 'official' joint sponsor on record is, since I submitted my FIL's documents at the interview and they had the first joint sponsor's documents from NVC). The pre-screener kept both documents and said it would be upto the CO but the CO never mentioned anything, so who knows?

Yes, there are guidelines, they are documented on page 9 of the I-864.

If you are sponsoring your spouse only and are using assets only, those assets, which can include cash, would be 3 times 125% of the poverty guidelines. So for two people, sponsor and spouse, you would need to show 3 x $18,212.00 or $54,636.00 USD.

To use cash assets, in the bank, you must provide them with:

Bank statements covering the last 12 months, or a statement from an officer of the bank or other financial institution in which the sponsor has deposits, including deposit/withdrawal history for the last 12 months, and current balance; link

I completely agree with you! It really doesn't seem right that these people who don't even know us have the power to decide (sometimes, it seems, fairly arbitrarily) whether or not people who love each other get to be together. But it looks like everything is on track for you two, and I'm happy for you! And yeah, if it weren't for me being in grad school here in the U.S. I'd just go live with him in Turkey anyway. Much easier process and in my opinion a nicer life!

Thanks for the link. It was the cash assets guidelines I was wondering about. I knew about the 125% of poverty thing, but was wondering how the bank statements worked, what exactly they were looking for. Thanks!

So you mean the bank letter wont be enough for them? Cuz we just sent them a letter notarized by the bank manager's assistance. Its just saying on my famous green light paper which is for the missing docs " more need funds on a bank 15k" so I gave them what exactly they expecting to see right?

That's not quite right.

Two things.

They say "a statement from an officer of the bank etc etc including deposit/withdrawal history for the last 12 months, and current balance" They are not asking for one or the other, they state both.

The second thing, everything is up to the CO on the day. Yours gave you a specific request, you complied - done. That does not mean it is ok for anyone else.

I know that everything is up to the CO and has the final say. The CO my wife had gave her specific request and that is what we have done. And fyi, I never said what I quoted was for "everyone"
