Hey everyone!

I have a couple questions about what happens once you POE and get married!

1st: Once I get married, I can apply for a Social Security Number, and change my driver's license right?

2nd: Then, I fill in the forms for the Employment Authorisation and AOS as soon as possible?

3rd: Is it true that you cannot leave the US for holidays or what not for 2 years after you get married?

Thanks for replying!

Hi,

Good questions, now I'd like to find that out as well from someone... I've heard people say, that for Work you get a stamp at the border, others said nope, that isn't valid, others said the embassy gives you a working permit or something. Anyone that can clear things up for us here?

You are stuck in the US for about 2-3 months after entry until you get your advance parole doucment. You apply for that with your AOS. I *THINK* you can get emergency advance parole (for a justified reason) by making an infopass apointment, but don't quote me on it.

1 - You can apply for a SS# immediately if you want, but everything Ive read is to wait 2 weeks after POE to give your information time to appear in the system. In regards to changing your SS# after marriage (IE, if you take his name) then I think if your i94 is still valid, you can just hold off on getting the SS# till you have the marriage cert. Im not 100% sure, but maybe one of the other girls thats done it can clarify, I think Rhiann recently did it? I saw a post from her about it not long ago I recall.

2 - Once you have the Marriage certificate you will apply for AoS, EAD, and AP all at once, hopefully they dont raise the cost of that too, its already $1010.

3 - You can leave the US once you have your AP, or your Green Card, both seem to be arriving very close together from what Ive been reading. You are only stuck in the US until one of those arrives in your mitt.

Correct, for most that is the easiest way. Depending on where you live you may be able to get everything in your married name including SSN, i was able to.

2nd: Then, I fill in the forms for the Employment Authorisation and AOS as soon as possible?

As soon as you have your marriage certificates yes. depending on county some can be ready asap others may take a few weeks.

3rd: Is it true that you cannot leave the US for holidays or what not for 2 years after you get married?

Wrong, you can leave BUT ONLY WITH YOUR AP (Advanced Parole). Which is a separate form to fill out aside from the aos and ead. Once you get your green card you can come and go as you wish.

Thanks for replying!

My advice - wait until you get married and have the marriage certificate before applying for your SSN. Otherwise you just have to go through the name change process which makes you hit all the places again. In our case that meant she didn't get a SSN until 6 weeks after crossing (waited 3 weeks to get married, took the court two weeks to mail our certificate).

04/04/07 - Mailed I-129F via USPS Priority Mail

04/09/07 - Petition Delivered to TSC

04/13/07 - NOA1

08/06/07 - NOA2

09/05/07 - Packet 3 Arrives

09/12/07 - Packet 3 Returned

11/24/07 - Packet 4 Received

02/13/08 - Interview

02/20/08 - Approved

04/27/08 - POE @ Detroit

09/03/08 - EAD Approved

Thanks again everyone!

So are all these forms on VJ? (AOS, EA and AP)

I guess I better start thinking about if I want to take his name or not

By the way, you might not get your Green Card close to your AP. I've had my AP for almost 3 months now, and no green card.

12/31/2009 - Marriage

07/21/2010 - AOS approved

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

I applied for a SSN 2 weeks after arriving to the US. After I got married, I went back & changed my last name (this took a bit of a fight, but they did it).

If you apply for AOS/AP/EAD immediately after getting married, you should be able to leave the US in 2-3 months.

8/2/2021:  Mailed N-400

8/4/2021: N-400 received

8/6/2021:  Biometrics to be reused
3/15/2022:  Interview (successful)
