Obama Won't Secure Border Until Lawmakers Move on Immigration Package

Published June 21, 2010

President Obama is refusing to secure the border until Congress reaches a breakthrough on comprehensive immigration reform, Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl said at a recent town hall meeting.

The No. 2 Senate Republican, in a video clip posted on YouTube showing the senator speaking to a local Tea Party crowd on Friday, said the president told him during a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office that he was concerned he wouldn't win GOP support on immigration legislation if he took care of border security first.

"The problem is, he said, if we secure the border, then you all won't have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform," Kyl said, as the crowd in the room gasped loudly. "In other words, they're holding it hostage."

The White House denied the claim on Monday. Spokesman Bill Burton and Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer both said Kyl "knows" Obama did not make that comment to him in their meeting.

"The president didn't say that and Senator Kyl knows it," Pfeiffer said in a written statement. "There are more resources dedicated toward border security today than ever before, but, as the president has made clear, truly securing the border will require a comprehensive solution to our broken immigration system."

Burton repeated the claim at the press briefing Monday afternoon.

But Kyl's office stood by the senator's account. Kyl spokesman Ryan Patmintra said, "There were two people in that meeting, and Dan Pfieffer was not one of them." He said Pfeiffer's call for comprehensive immigration legislation "only confirms" Kyl's story.

While Obama has pledged to send an influx of National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, Kyl said in the clip that the president made clear to him that border security is just a political tool in the broader goal of passing an immigration package through Congress.

Kyl said he was "not so sure" the president's concern about GOP support was legitimate, but that regardless, the administration has an "obligation" to secure the border.

"They don't want to secure the border unless and until it is combined with comprehensive immigration reform," Kyl said. "They frankly don't want to do it. They want to get something in return for doing their duty."

Why should we believe him?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

The Dumbocrats will not ever secure the border. It certainly will never happen if millions more of illegal aliens are eventually given voting citizenship through a massive amnesty on top of the millions that have already been given amnesty and citizenship already. The Dumbocrats love amnestied illegal aliens. They all vote Dumbocrat. So why would the Dumbocrats secure the border or even half azz deter illegal immigration? The answer is...they won't and they don't.

#### Obama. Real immigration reform won't happen under Obama, Pelosi, & Reid.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

The Feds have had their chance to fix the system, and now it's up to the states to win this war

by attrition. The Arizona law is obviously working since illegals are fleeing Arizona en masse;

we just have to keep pushing and soon they will have nowhere to go but home.

Peejay,

I am the dumbocrat and I am very much for securing the border and against the amnesty for illegal aliens. I am also pro-choice, pro-socialist and anti-religion. I am real. Your views on dumbocrats are not.

It is also my understanding that it is the Republicans who want to keep the illegal aliens in the US, as those are cheap workforce.

Now, did real immigration reform took place ever before, under any republican government?... No? Then we can conclude that if not under democrats according to you, such reform will equally never happen under any government.

#1...I'm not a Republican. And if it makes you feel better, I am and was just as vocal when I see Republiclowns deceive, omit the facts, and misrepresent.

#2...The Democrats have the Whitehouse and both houses of congress. They are the ones that are not enforcing existing immigration and work authorization laws along with refusing to secure the border. I and nobody else can do anything about what happened yesterday when the Republicans had the keys to the country. That was then and this is now. Sorry if it pisses you off that I state the obvious.

#3...If you disagree with the policies of your party, let them know about it. I do. I have a Dumbocrat as my representative in the house and I hammer that stupid ####### every chance I get. I even do it politely and am ignored. I get no response to my correspondence or inquiries. Apparently he feels safe that he doesn't need my vote. That is what happens when you are a minority that lives in a racial gerrymandered district in which a Dumbocratic congressman runs year after year unopposed. This is not democracy at work.

#4...Obama and his cronies are Dumbocrats. Their actions and inactions speak for themselves. Sorry if it pisses you off, but that's just the way it is. If you consider yourself a Dumbocrat rather than a Democrat...that is your right to do so.
