Hello every1.

I am a lady from the Philippines. I'm in a relationship with an american man, for a year and half, he met me and my family here in my country. And we had trip in one of asian countries.

We are hoping to be together soon in his country. Right now his back in USA. And I am here in Philippines working.

HE is about to file petition for me, K1-visa. He has all the papers already.

My question is do we need to do it with our own, or for easy process do we need to have an agency?

Knowing the fact that we both 1st timers to do this and this is a big step for us.

I hope you can give me advice based on your experience.

Thank you and God Bless...

Welcome! Just follow the guides. They worked perfectly for me. You shouldn't need an agency or lawyer. This forum is a great resource.

Most can do this without the need for an attorney or agency. You should both read the K-1 guide here very thoroughly and get a good understanding of the process.

One thing to keep in mind, if you use an agency or attorney, it is still your responsibility to review all of their work.

There are multiple steps to the process which starts with the USC filing an I129F petition.

Once the petition is approved it is forwarded to the NVC and then to the consulate in your country. Then you (the beneficiary) are provided with instructions on how to apply for the visa.

Upon visa approval - you then can come to the US and get married and file for permanent residency.

Please read the guides here on VJ and get a good understanding of what to expect. A typical K-1 case without any RFE's may me completed in around 6 months (sometimes shorter - many times longer).

There is no EASY process or fast process - read and understand and you should be fine.

Wow! I'm amazed w/ all the response I got. W/in short span of time since I posted my question. I thank you for that, now I'm gonna follow all the links and info's U provided. And will ask again here, in VJ. Good God I found this site in 1 of my friends blog.

I guess I do not need agency, I will just read and have better understanding 'bout the "legal" terms here.

Hi emocional and Destiny2532...welcome to VJ. :)

My wife, Chinook, and I were K-1ers just like you. Thank goodness my malambing Pinay wife found this web site, because it saved us a lot of money. I was going to pay a lawyer $1500 but we decided to do it ourselves. With VJ's help, my wife received her visa and we are now happily married. You can do it yourselves too. Like Dianne said, we hope to see both of you over in the Philippines forum. Ingatz...and good luck!

We also thought of hiring an attorney, however, a friend of a friend reccommended this site, and it has really been very helpful. Just read the guides and you can also use the search engine, however, if you can't find the answers, you can post your questions and a lot of people will be be glad to help.

Go to Philippine forum and you will also find lots of valuable information.

Good luck!
