The climate bill would cost you up to $146 extra a year; what does that mean?

good for you ... do you feel good about this?

we have two vehicles ... the gasoline powered vehicle has been garaged and used as needed .... the other vehicle is driven ....

Considering that I believe all this carbon footprint nonsense has been exaggerated to no end I can honestly say I dont think I would feel better if my car actually did run on flower power.

We have two vehicles, both gas powered. A car and a truck. The car gets very good gas mileage. I have a 45 minute drive to work and Im more concerned about my wallet than my carbon footprint.

If you believe this I got some oceanfront property in Arizona I would like to sell you!

Lies and more lies, it will cost every household more than that! Ovomit and Kerry the ferry are liars, do the math, the EPA is an instrument or a tool of massive dictatorship for Ovomit now to force on all of us his lofty out of touch unrealistic new world order socialist communist agenda. You can bet those new taxes will cost more than $79-$146 a year more like per month or double to quadruple per month. People open your eyes. And Ovomit will try to use this Gulf Oil incident to make excuse for him to push this energy tax off on all of us! AND who is it going to truly help??? I can tell you the same people at the top of the food chain in WALL STREET that made out like one armed bandits in a casino back in 2008 when we bailed them out with taxpayer funds! This "cap and trade" means "craps and taxes" And here is what is going to happen, these tax credits the government will issue for corp to pollute will be traded or bought and sold on a new exchange or board of trade just like stocks or bonds or derivatives or commodities. AND who will benefit from all this trading of tax credits??? WALLSTREET, they are the ones that will be making the lucrative commissions off all those trades and guess what, when you factor in speculation and their commission, those costs all get passed on down the food chain, right on down to the bottom, that is right you and I the end consumer once again gets hit with this hidden tax, thanks to Ovomit and the democrat congress. I have never seen such a spend and tax bunch ever, this is ridiculous and it is not going to stop pollution from corp or green house gas, which is the problem, think about it all it is going to do is allow these companies to continue to pollute but now US govt is going to make them pay a fee or tax to pollute thus guess who that tax is getting passed on to??? That is right you and I the end user. What a joke Ovomit is.

Yesterday, EPA released its long-awaited analysis of the American Power Act, Kerry and Lieberman's Senate climate bill. What most journalists and pundits have seized on is this finding: between 2010 to 2050, the legislation would cost the average American household between $79 to $146 extra a year. Now, on its face, that seems bad. Generally, people don't like to hear that they're going to have to spend more money. But some context is in order.

As a backdrop, consider that the EPA analysis shows American consumption and incomes rising throughout the period the legislation is place. We're going to get richer and richer and have more and more. It's just that if we attempt to save the world, we'll be just a little bit less richer.

How much less richer? What does $146 a year really mean? I asked around and got some nice figures for comparison from Jason Selfe, a research analyst at the Rhodium Group, a New York-based economic research firm.

For perspective, $146 a year is:

  • about $0.40/day, $3/week, or $12/month;
  • two text messages a day at $.20 each;
  • about one Starbucks coffee a week ($4.05);
  • a 24 pack of Coca-Cola Classic a month ($11.04);
  • $63 less a month or $756 less a year than the average cost of cable;
  • about the average cost of toilet paper ($140) for a family per year;
  • less than the savings a day ($.91 - $1.62) from substituting Evian ($1.58/bottle) or Fiji ($2.29/bottle) bottled water for Poland Springs ($.67/bottle) when buying a 24 pack;
  • a monthly subscription to Netflix ($8.99) plus a weekly supply of buttered microwave popcorn ($.75/pack); or
  • about a monthly trip to the box office ($7.50) and a small popcorn ($4.75).

Would the American people pay as much to save the world as they pay for toilet paper? Would they pay as much as they pay to go to the movies? I have to believe they would.

Cost simply isn't a credible reason to oppose a carbon cap. The challenge is communicating that fact to the public in the face of misleading agitprop from the other side.

Perhaps you missed 8 years under Bush when spending got out of control and the government grew exponentially??????

Also, Cap and Trade has been around for many many years now. It''s not just Obama. It's a corporate interest push and you're right about it benefitting Walstreet as in the end, most everything does in one way or another.

Make no mistake, if a bill gets passed (and a Republic or Democrat congress would be willing to pass it) no matter who is president, it will be signed.

I'm selling a 2004 F250 XL Super Duty....I don't know a lot about cars/trucks but this truck is terrible on gas. I think it gets between 11 and 14 mpg depending on how it is driven but can't find anything factual online. I think it has a 38-gallon tank so that explains why when the gas light is on and I dump $25 (8 gallons) in I am pretty much still on E with the gas light still on!

<climbing onto soap box>

This will do nothing to reduce pollution. It WILL transfer about one billion dollars per year from US energy consumers to the owners of the Chicago Climate Exchange, and other similar exchanges. People like Al Gore (self proclaimed inventor of the internet, and publisher of the fraudulent "hockey stick" global warming report), will become richer from owing a piece of this exchange. This is simply another maneuver to transfer wealth from one segment of the US populace to another.

The cited figures fail to take into account the "trickle down" effect of escalated energy costs. All goods and services touched by the more expensive energy, will become more expensive too. This will induce inflation and increased labor costs. The inflation induced wealth, and slightly reduced wealth, from the argument is a silly strawman. Real growth in wages always trails rapid increases in inflation, often by years. The net result is this: money will rapidly be drawn from energy consumers, pollution will not decline, and real income will lag in comparison to the rising prices.

If the real goal was to reduce pollution, mandating installation of "smokestack scrubbers" on all US coal burning power plants would have a dramatic and immediate effect on carbon emissions. Applying a tax on imports from nations that do not install similar scrubbers, would level the pollution abatement playing field. An approach like this would actually accomplish a reduction in pollution.

The new mantra in my neighborhood is: Just say NO to socialism; Vote the bastards out! :thumbs:

i'm just curious - this "average american" does he live within 400 miles of the us-canadian border by any chance, and spend quite a bit on heating the house?

or is it based on someone in the southern us?

We can only hope that gloal warming will save us from higher winter heating costs... :rofl:

Obama stated, 'Under my plan, electricity rates will necessarily skyrocket." So, anyone who relies on air conditioning will feel a serious bite too. Anyone living more than 400 miles south of the Mason-Dixon line will see summer electricity prices increase more than $147 per month. :blink:

it probably sounds great to someone living in a climate that does not have significant swings in the temperature. however, around here it's a high of 105+ during the summer and a low sometimes to -20 f.

i'm betting that $146 will turn out to be significantly higher - as i've yet to see a government estimate that was even close to reality.

There is not doubt that you will feel a significant increase in climate control costs. But do not despair, Obama has a team of Marxist climate and jobs Czars people working to help you! :whistle:

If you are reliant upon AC, and do not have any large hydro power sources of electricity, Cap and Trade would increase your electric bill more than $147 every month during the cooling season. No one will be spared from the skyrocketing increases in electric costs. If you use a heat pump, the pumps use electricity to move the water. Even if your home water comes from a well, the electricity to bring water to your home will cost significantly more.

People should really be writing to their Senators about this now. There will be a serious push to get a Senate version of the Cap and Trade bill passed before November. After November, Cap and Trade will be dead for at least a decade.
