'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

funny how no one was whining about civilians getting killed then, but one dead one in lebanon and the news is all over it.

I'm not sure that you can relativise the destruction of Japanese cities by A-Bomb with the current situation going in Lebanon. The situations were very different - as was the level of desperation (after suffering many tens of thousands of troop casualties) that prompted the US to drop the bomb.

Hezbollah/Israel 2006 is not WW2.

You have one side that fires antiquated missiles indiscriminately into Israel (many of which have no chance of hitting a populated area) vs. a heavily armed, state of the art military that steadily pounding a region of Lebanon into dust.

bows and arrows are antiquated too but they still kill effectively.

only reason such has 'no chance of hitting a populated area' is the ineptitude of those firing them.

Well, if Hizballah is inept, the least Israel can do is shoot with their eyes closed, so as to be as inept as Hizballah. Anything else simply wouldn't be "proportionate"

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

The relative impotence of Hezbollah's antiquated has nothing to do with their ideological desire and zealous fervour to destroy Israel.

But this particular conflict is being fought on a level other than that of conventional warfare. It is a propaganda war - and to win all Hezbollah HAS TO DO is fire as many rockets as possible (whether or not they hit anything is ultimately irrelevant, though clearly they aren't trying to miss). All Israel CAN DO is lay waste to the entire region with a massive aerial and artillery bombardment that has destroyed the nations infrastructure and killed an inordinate number of Lebanese civilians (who have nowhere else to go, and have no way to leave because all the roads and transport links have been destroyed.

It seems fairly clear to me who is 'winning'

Like Al Qaeda, Hezbollah will use the massive collateral damage resulting from Israel's typically heavy-handed response to say "Look at what they (Israel) are doing to our people". Ultimately it gives Hezbollah and its backers validation that Israel (and its backers) are waging war on Islam. Most of the people living in southern lebanon, many of whom are not members of Hezbollah or otherwise affiliated with them, having been subject to israeli military incursions in the past, probably don't have much reason to trust them now.

Whatever trust they might have had would likely evaporate the instant their community is hit by an Israeli bomb.

The rockets into isreal will stop if Isreal stops its crimes. What happened is Japen should be taken as a Lesson Nukes should not exist within any nation. People seem to forget that the US and Isreal posses such weapons.

On the point of rockets going into Isreal, don't forget that the bombs being dropped in lebanon are accurate and hitting building in which civilians are there. As of now, My cousin and my ant's home has been destroyed. There was no "Hezbollah homes or offices there". No one is hurt Thank God.

What is Happening in Lebanon is a Crime of War. What Happened in Japan is Discussting. What is more discusting is the fact that the world has let it go on that long and it is still going on. The Human race in General discusts me. Shame on all the Governments. and Shame on the ones that Support them.

Why in the Hell would you trust Isreal When Isreal in the past has said That lebanon and Isreal cannot co exist. The Bottom line is the US gave the green light to Isreal to destroy Lebanon. I have no sympothy for Isreal, after all don't forget that Isreal is an Occupied land just like the US. They where built on Murder.

You are absolutely right, but what makes you think that war is bad for Israel or the US?

The military drives commerce and vice versa. The industrial revolution started because

King George needed cannons for his troops in the American colonies, which in turn led to

the invention of the steam engine to pump water out of coalmines to produce high-grade

coke for iron smelting. Computers were invented to help win World War II --

Alan Turing's Colossus computer to decipher Enigma codes and electronic devices at

Los Alamos to calculate the reaction of uranium-235 for the atomic bomb.

It's good for us in the sense that war has always been good for us. But for the purposes of stopping terrorism and fundamentalist extremism - no. Never has, never will.
