Hi everyone. I got married December of 2009 in Lake Tahoe. I live an hour away from San Francisco. My passport needs to be renewed before the end of this year and I am going back to the Philippines this October and have that done. I'd like to use my married name when I renew it. I already know the requirements to report marriage in the US. Should I report it in San Francisco which is closer or in Los Angeles? Again, I got married in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

To make it less hassle for me, can I just report my marriage in NSO in the Philippines when I get there in October? I am hoping that this is possible since I will be there direct. I couldn't find anywhere though on how to go about doing this and what the requirements are. Anybody here done the same thing or I really have to report my marriage here in the US since I got married here?

All replies will be appreciated.

You can still file with the NSO though. As for here, you can file at either San Francisco, or LA.

Hope this helps.

Edited to add: You don't have to register here just because you married here. As long as the NSO paperwork is filed, you're covered.

Report your marriage to the Los Angeles Consulate if you married in Southern Nevada ( (covering the counties of: Clark, Lincoln & Nye). If you married in Northern Nevada, report it to the San Francisco Consulate.

For passport renewal, renew it in the Embassy/Consulate that has jurisdiction over the State where you reside. Check here: http://www.philippin...ulatesinUSA.htm

Since you married abroad, the report of marriage must go through the consular process via the Philippine Embassy or Consulate. You cannot submit a foreign document directly without it being authenticated by a Philippine authority.

Why don't u report your marriage here and renew your passport at the same time. You can not renew your passport here and use your married name in ur new passport till you report your marriage here first coz that is the first requirement to renew your passport.

I did report my marriage here and then renew my passport in Washington DC and no prblem at all.

Thanks guys. I didn't want to do it here because I'm afraid I won't get my renewed passport on time. Again, I'm leaving the 20th of October. You guys think I will get my passport back that time?

Thanks for all the replies.

You have more than enough time. My passport arrived in six weeks, as promised by the Consulate.

I got mine after 6 weeks and my friend got hers in a month so you have plenty of time.
