OK - what is marmite? We are leaving for the UK in a week, and it sounds like one of those things you have to try once. My wife's favorite dish (Ukrainian salty fish) makes me want to puke on my shoes, although the kind they serve up in Ukraine is more palateable. She feels exactly the same about peanut butter.

It's yeast extract, thick, dark, and treacly-looking and it is delicious. :D Also see: Twiglets.

I looked it up  We will probably give it a try, thanks.

Well, of COURSE we see eye to eye, Alan. I am your No 1 Internet Girlfriend after all.luv.gif

Harrogate -- interesting. I shall add it to my list of possible relocation locations. I know a lot of people have horror stories about the NHS, but I'm not one of them. The worst treatment I ever got over there was through the student health service at Bristol University, where I was accused of faking it when I showed up with a 103F fever, unable to climb stairs to the doctor's office due to weakness. I had to be carried up there and she still was offended by my presence. No clue what that was about. In retrospect, I should have gone straight to hospital. I also had some amazing private care (BUPA) over there too, and the private hospitals are nice. I wanted to stay forever!

haha Bristol

You will know the Brit slang 'Bristols' and what it means....(google>> 'bristols slang')

Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Clifton suspension bridge...easy for Cornwall, Wales, south Coast London etc -- top spot !

You have me at it now just as I decided to stay here !

I reckon a week on the 3rd week in november should cure it. England is the best place in the world in a nice summer and the worst place in the world any other time. Blue passport first.

Not easy faking 103f unless you you have had rush limbaugh on top of you an hour

Don't eat Marmite - it's ground down pony poop - or it tastes like it (I would imagine)

Do eat fussles condensed milk which will rot your fillings instantly

ps there are NO English people in London - avoid it after seeing the tower - go to York, the last kingdom of Eric Bloodaxe, son of Harold Fairhair. Mother, Ragnhildr in ríka,

Spent two days in London last time, two weeks in Cornwall. I remember loking in a shop full of tourist ####### in Paddington - having a Bulgarian guest-worker translate for the Pakistani shopkeep. Then I ate at a pub completely staffed by Polish. My cousins laughed like hell when I told them.

This time its a week in London, to do all the tourist stuff I missed before - then a few days with friends in Cambridge. Never been there, but I am looking forward to seeing it.

Oh, I know what Bristols are. ;) I keep my own ship shape and in Bristol fashion.

I was very, very happy in Bristol and was very unhappy to leave when we had to move back to London. If we could have, we would never have left. The quality of life was very high there, and we lived smack dab in the city, walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go. Some amazing pubs (Coronation Tap, Highbury Vaults, White Bear, Llandoger Trow), great music and arts, Clifton just up the hill from us, Brandon Hill and Cabot Tower... Sigh.

Even in November.star_smile.gif

are they really any worse than sardines and the like?

Imagine rotten sardines pickled in rhine after they went bad. Then left in the sun for three days and served.

You can pickle in the Rhine now? Wow, that I did not know.tongue.gif

How about brine? The smell makes Vika's mouth water. It makes my eyes water, while my gorge rises. Quite a pair, we two.
