BACON ! You were lucky. When I were a lad they used to take us to the farm just to lick the pigs !

Come on though Brit bacon is a million light years in advance of this burned fat stuff they flog over here. Bacon sarny with hp sauce ? Orgasmatolic^100 !

If he left the promised land at age 14 he will likely have lost the fine rangy bone structure and brain cell optimization that comes from Yorkshire beer age 15 on... Especially if he voluntarily became a southerner without the excuse of being captured by the slave trade

He went kicking and screaming when his dad got a job at a boy's school in Kent. Then followed 4 miserable years at a grammar school amongst Southerners. He got the fine rangy bone structure but missed out on the beer. He doesn't drink anyway, which is another reason why he is surplus to requirements now.

Stop talking about bacon. Please. It makes me want to cry.

I really don't get how your style of bacon hasn't caught on over here. I mean, I'm the US native side of the equation here, never spent more than a few weeks over there, and I LOVE the stuff over there, and if we want it here, we have to go to a specialty store and pay like $10 for 6 little slices (or is it 5) because the guy has to import frozen stuff. It's NUTS!!

yes it's like football/soccer.

I am attempting to have the best of both worlds and I take the best of the US and the best of UK/Europe

I travel back and forth every 12 weeks or so and when I am there I have had enough after a week or so - especially if it's raining- and after I have been here 3 months I am ready for some sanity without MSNBC or FOX or pat robertson and people shooting abortion doctors and each other - it's just nice to get away from the nuttyness. I suppose an American might see Liz sat that there with her orb and mace with a crown on her head as insanity but at least it's a lot quieter and relaxing - this joint is frenetic !

I see they executed a guy by firing squad in Utah this morning - doesn't happen in Cornwall - but now I just shrug - must be getting used to it

better not mention currant teacakes then - or ginger biscuits - or F&C with mushy peas - or

Cheshire cheese - or chicken masala and popadums and two Chapatis or Chapathi Hindi: चपाती

repeating myself but ....

It's getting so much coverage here because it seems so shocking to so many other people (Americans too) as well. On the way in this morning on the news on the radio they did a story about the events (executions) which brought about the evolution of AZ's execution methods from hanging -> gas chamber -> lethal injection. gruesome stuff.

mushy peas - or

Eeew, Seriously, what is the appeal for this dish. *shudder* Nik got some once at the local F&C place by him, but not because he liked it, more for the "show heather all our weird foods" factor.

did you eat any ? - you would remember about 1 hour later - it could be used as an execution method with only the addition of a cork

It's like caviar - you have to acquire the taste by eating it every day like Royalty eats caviar

I had a small amount - perhaps one or two teaspoons - Then i decided I liked non-mushed peas better (And I really don't like those either) :P

I think that they are roughly analogous to refried beans, right? Cooked and mashed and stuffed with fat and then cooked more?

I looked up how to make the beans just to be sure I had it right, and at the bottom of the page, there was an add for "Want to know how to loose 30 pounds or more?" Haha!

they are processed peas that are dried and then reconstituted. Pretty sure there is no fat like pork and beans - yuk But they also sell curry sauce in the F&C shops so you can dunk your chips

I was over there a couple of weeks ago and I had F&C (northern icelandic haddock) 5 times in 5 days. When I worked in Leeds in 1979, I had F&C for lunch every workday for 18 months and I wanted more

Never put an ounce on cos a bit of what you fancy does you the world of good ;)

I'm with Heather on the mushy peas, sorry. Gack.

You probably tried em CA style (up the nose)

Once you have had em intravenously you will never go back

We once had a German Engineer over to install a machine and we we invited him to the Director's dining room and fed him F&C with mushy peas

Then Ralph asked him where he was from and he said Koeln (Cologne)- and said "Have you ever been there ?"

Ralph said "Yes, I went there every night for two weeks once" (He used to be a bomber pilot)

These two acts were the cruelest example of Nationalism I have ever witnessed personally

My cousins introduced me to mushy peas in Penzance a couple of years ago, as a side dish to what they called the "real fish n' chips". I recall that it was pretty good. I still can't eat at long John Silver's

Hate to think about this but I probably would have gone back before we had the baby. Now it depends on how our son will be able to adjust so I would prefer to stay for some time and assess before making a decision.

ok we are back on topic..

We have had speculation about whether it's harder for men than women to stay in a foreign country and alone - but I would think it was much tougher for a non-native English speaker - especially if they come from a country of big close families.

Perhaps the educational and national awareness /history knowledge of people would come into it. My son lives in Tenerife but knows nothing of winston churchill or the English civil war or the labour movement or de-colonization etc etc. England means football and where his mother lives, and where the lager costs more - but little else. So a guy like that isn't really leaving anything significant behind him.

When I see Brits taking to the US with never a backward (in the nicest sense of the word) glance, I wonder how aware of their heritage they are. I asked my pal in Atlanta who said "I am shallow, I have always been shallow - so the US is perfect for me"

He would never go back he says, but is GC after being here at least 15 years - so something more is going on his head - and he can afford the $675 to naturalize

I've always loved the story of Peter Mandelson mistaking mushy peas for guacamole. Can't say that I am a fan - yuck!

Got to be a pun there...

Peter Mandelson doesn't know - well I could quote from 'rob roy' but that would be indelicate

As far as politicians go there isn't much to choose between UK/US - but at least they are both bio-degradeable.

ok off to the range to put some rounds through my lee enfields while I still can. They don't allow those in HIN GER LAND
