I've dyed my own yarn before -- much fun and I love how it turns out. One of my friends has learned how to spin recently and I am looking forward to learning too. :)

What did you use to do your dyeing? I've played with both "natural" dyes that require a lot of work and are kind of chancey, and synthetic dyes. Food coloring is nice and easy if you want something bright and simple.

Spinning is loads of fun but does get kind of messy. I collect up all the stray bits of wool afterward and needlefelt them into little wool balls for my cats to play with. It's hard to get a good even strand of yarn for a while, though!

Last time I did it some friends and I had a dyeing party. We used Paas easter egg tablets, Wiltons food dye and Kool Aid. The Kool Aid was the most subtle, the the Wiltons, and finally the Paas. You can get surprisingly beautiful and natural colours with the Wiltons. A lot of good advice on Ravelry on doing it.

Awww, thank you Gemmie! I'll find a helpless childhood stuffed animal to model it. I started baby Emily's kitty hat last night -- I thought it would be nice for her to have something that started it's first day on her first day too.star_smile.gif

Oh god, I am becoming such an old softie. Next thing you know I'll be wanting a sproglet of my own. Yikes. Better open the gin.
