Totally agree, but if I was one of the millions of homeless Americans, I would not be too interested in the protection of troops from foreign invaders.

those troops also help enforce treaties, some of which australia is a part of.

Why do you guys assume cutting back the military or having a reasonable sized yet well equipped military means the same as entirely getting rid of it?

Saving a trillion a year and pumping that into America, which desperately needs it, still leaves a good $300 billion a year for the military. I just don't buy staying poor while the military eats caviar. Or cutting back from state schools and police, while the military expands. Which begs the question, what are you guys protecting? Certainly cannot be rusted out middle America.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

The question is who? This is 2010, excluding NK or Iran, most other countries are trying to improve their country. Heck, even Russia learned from this huge mistake the Soviet Union made. You realize if they had not wasted all of their money on their military, the Soviet Union would probably be wealthier as a country than the US now.

It's truly interesting how so many people in middle America still think America is the envy of the world and many are out to get the country.

i personally don't care if the world envies the US or not. but, not many countries would have the stones to try & invade the US. hell the philippines has 113,000 troops.

Don't doubt it. The question again is, military aside, who would want to invade the US?

Troop numbers are irrelevant in modern wars, it's all about technology. Australia has the 14th largest military expenditure in the world and could easily ramp it up, sinc eit only runs at 1.8% of their GDP.

But that is not the point. Like most, they are simply not interested in wasting their money on the military. You guys get a kick out of personally buying guns, most other don't. So no doubt about it, you would have more guns and better guns. This is the same sort of comparison. It's why so many of you simply don't understand the concept of others doing better. In your eyes, a better city or better quality of life is not important, gun ownership is.

nobody in their right mind given the size of & technology our military. then they'd have to deal w/ a heavily armed population. but, australia is rich in resources & has a very small armed force in comapision to its land mass. its not much of a deterrent for a semi miltary power.

Take that away and assume the US had Fiji's military, who would want to spend waste their money attacking and what would they take over? You think China would attack? You owe them too much money and they hold too much of the US's money in cash.

Right-wingers prefer Americans stay poor, not receive a dime, live in trailers etc than the money be cut from the military and invested on America. That is your choice but it has come at huge cost - a large number of Americans in poverty and the country looking like #######.

For me Australia is spending too much on troops. The money could be spent on other things in the country.

Pleeeeease without technology you guys get your azz kicked. Hello Vietnam.
