No. You cannot work on a K1 without an EAD.

Thanks, that's what i thought, other than getting married, is there anything else to stop me applying for the EAD as soon as i have my marriage cert?

Well you would normally apply for the EAD and AP at the same time as filing AOS as the fee for AP and EAD are wavied when filed with AOS.

if you choose to file for the EAD prior to AOS, you will need to pay the fee for it, and it will only be valid until your I-94 expires. Given the length of time it takes to GET the EAD you will have paid $300+ for a month of working. You would then need to stop working until you file AOS and for a new EAD at that time.
