Hello everyone,

So I am patiently waiting for my SSN to arrive in the mail. I have created a list of things to accomplish, but wondered if I can do any of them without my SSN, and just with my VISA.

For example: PA driver's license, Cell phone plan (contract), apply for jobs.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

You can apply for jobs without your SSN, but that's about it. Here are two links that will come in handy for getting your PA drivers licence and for registering your car.

Read it closely. And a little FYI, when you go to get your license, take a check or money order. They do not take cash. Same with most title agencies where you have to go for your registration.

You can't open a bank account either without a SSN, you are are pretty much stuck until that comes in, unfortunately.

If your SSN doesn't come in within 3 weeks of entry, you will need to go apply at the SS office. My hubby had to do this back in March. After he did that his card came in the mail in about a week. Just in time for him to start his new job....

If after 10-14 BUSINESS days,no SSN in the mail, download a new application from SSA.GOV and head to ur local office with ur Cdn passport and birth cert and inquire about the status of it! If its not in the system, hand them over the already filled out application! I (as well as many others) have had to go this route, mine arrived in the mail 1 week later!

Some banks will allow you to open an account without a SSN, as mine did allow me,but they are probably few and far in between!

My husband did. But his card came in a few days after he started his job, so he had to wait to get paid until his employer had the number to put in the system. So his first check was delayed a week. No biggie.

No - the first day you start, they'll want your SSN card because they need it to process their payroll. Everyone likes to get paid

Just noticed someone else's comment above - my company definitely would not accept you starting without proof of your SSN
