I guess there are if you are the one who benefits.

Would African Americans be better off if they were never brought over here and still in Africa to this day?

I mean let's be a little realistic.

Either way, many plantation owners had it in their best interests to make sure slaves were fed well, kept healthy, etc.

Nah, this is BS, most had a better life back in war torn poverty stricken African countries.

Of course, let's also ignore the fact there were black plantation owners with slaves as well.

hmmm.

They'd be wealthy and living in the land of Eden. Enjoying plenty of good quality food and a the uber high standard of living there.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

So what. You think that somehow justifies what is generally regarded as an atrocity?

Next you'll be telling me that while the holocaust was indeed terrible, we should celebrate that it created a surplus of wigs and false teeth.

Weird doesn't begin to describe it.

Sometimes bad things end up producing good ends for people or later generations.

While the holocaust was a horrible event, there's also the argument that on a scale of population control, it had its benefits. The entire war did... Estimated over 70,000,000 people were killed. Do the math on atleast half of those having an average of 3-4 children, then grandchildren, etc.. and then tack that on to today's population in some areas.

Even the worst events in history. Even the worst atrocities committed by individuals, ultiamtely have their benefits.

Actually that is the point, slavery is nothing compared to the likes of the holocaust; that is, compared to being pushed into chambers and poisoned to death because of your race and beliefs. Furthermore, nothing good came out of the holocaust period.

To the contrary of your point, had the holocaust not happened, millions of Jewish people would now be alive and doing well. Whereas, had slavery not occurred, truth be told, America would be safer crime wise; with rates probably akin to Canada and Australia. Certainly would not have any inner-city ghettos. However, so many prominent back Americans would never has flourished and very likely been stuck in a perpetual cycle of poverty in some African country.

Whether you grasp let alone accept this or not, that is the reality. Had your mother country not sentenced convicts to a desert country to death, they would not now be living this awesome quality of life in such an awesome country.

 you have a very odd way of looking at the world.

Relativising slavery, whatever will be next?

Yep, shove it all into the same bucked. Well unless it comes to hate crimes, then those should be segregated and punished accordingly.

I'd ask you a few questions, like would crime be negligible in 2010 had there been no slaves brought here or would Oprah be where she is had no ancestor been brought to the US; however I know you will do what you can to avoid answering them nor have the common sense to do so.

This whole thread reminds me of something a student wrote in a paper for me:

"Overall the Holocaust was bad for everyone involved -- except maybe the Nazis."

I cannot believe that someone said the Holocaust was good for population control...or that people are finding "silver linings" to slavery.

Pollyanna would be disgraced.

There are silver linings in everything. Regardless of what happened to get us there.

You could ask those questions, but they would be utterly meaningless.

Correction, you will do what you do best and not accept reality.

You truly answer questions as well as the CEO of BP.

Once again, had Oprah's ancestor not been brought here, would she be where she is today?

Therefore, has the tribulation of her ancestors ended up being a good thing for her fate and future or not?

Would Jesse Jackson enjoy the same level of freedom, to voice his both mouth, had his ancestors never been brought here?

Would Camden, NJ be a ghetto?

What is America's homicide rate when excluding AA?

etc etc etc

or that people are finding "silver linings" to slavery.

So would 2010 African Americans be better off had their ancestors not been sold off to America? It's a simple question than can easily be answered by looking at various African countries in 2010 and analyzing their current Q.O.L and so forth.

No, BY it is meaningless because noone has any clear idea about what the US would be like today if it weren't for slavery. It's inextricably linked to the country's past and present.

Rational pragmatic reasoning is not your forte, so I guess you probably couldn't make that analysis.

I don't need a crystal ball or parallel universe to realize the European colonization for this continent and Australia was bad for the aboriginal people of the land. You seem to disagree as we apparently have no clear idea of this.

While you are correct in that I cannot have predicted how the US would have turned out, I can predict what the fate of AA would have been and the prognosis would not have been good for most. A civil war would never have happened, saving close to a million lives.
