If a green card holder, do you need to show your passport to re-enter US?

Of course we always carry our passports to enter the other country. But will they ask an LPR for a passport on the way back to the US?

They always do. They have to stamp the passport and write down how many days you were outside of US.

The OP ought to clarify whether "they" refers to "the authorities in the other country at the LPR's point of exit from that country" or "U.S. CBP personnel at U.S. POE." I read the question the second way.

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

They will check your passport and GC when you enter any other country and they will check your passport and GC when you enter back into the US too.
Hmmm -- this must vary, because when the wife goes to Ecuador, Ecuadorian immigration at the airport checks only her (Ecuadorian) passport when they stamp her in & out. At U.S. POEs, CBP has checked only her green card -- both at airports & at land ports -- every time.

Well, she needs a passport in order to even enter the plane to the USA and she needs the GC in order to enter the USA, thus she has both on her, which is why I wonder what the underlying reason for your question might be?

Theoretically, if she by accident flushes her passport down the toilet while on a plane to the US, she would get in nonetheless, but are we really exploring such weird scenarios here?

I guess it depends on the CBP officer. 1 time they asked me for both on my way back ( I don't know why) and the other time they just swiped my card.

IMO, as a traveler, you're expected to have both a valid passport and your green card (resident status).

Then, they can't control every one all the time, but you have to be able to show them both at least to reenter the country at anytime upon request.

Just common sense here, i could be wrong.

passport name only, for air tickets, else you suffer big poo that you'll never have enough toilet paper to fix.

however - bring a marriage certificate with you for the trip.
