How to apply for a reentry permit

My husband (the US Citizen) and I are moving to Australia for his work. He works for a US company who is transferring him. We are not yet sure how long we will be there.

I believe I have to apply for a reentry permit in order to maintain my GC status. The permanent residency status was only approved today, so it should arrive in the mail in about 30 days.

Could anyone tell me how I go about applying for a reentry permit?

Do I have to stay in the country until this arrives?

Do I have to apply for it from the US, or could I do that in Australia?

Many thanks.

You have to file i-131, and yes, they recommend that you do it when you are still in the US.

You only have to stay in the US up to the point that you have taken your biometrics.

Then the permit can be sent to a US consulate/embassy abroad.

"We recommend that you file Form I-131 while you are in the United States. However, you do not have to be in the United States for USCIS to approve your Form I-131 and issue a reentry permit to you if your biometrics have been obtained. You can indicate on your Form I-131 that you want USCIS to send your reentry permit to a

U.S. Embassy, or consulate, or a DHS office overseas, so you can pick it up from one of those facilities."

Good luck

Just wanted to add that technically you only need a permit if you're going away for more than 1 year.

But I've heard that long trips as short as 6 months, or a repeated pattern of such trips, can be questioned too.

I recommend engineer21's suggestion. You do not need to be here in the US to receive the reentry permit. Just apply it and done everything before you go abroad and pick it up at US embassy/consulate in Australia.

Thank you everyone! That helps alot.

Just one more question. Since my AOS was approved and ordered for printing today (I saw it on the USCIS website), can I submit the I-131 now? Or do I have to wait until I receive the GC in the post.
