Hi, I have a question regarding my husband's birth certificate which is in Portuguese. He's a long-time American citizen and lost the original translated document many years ago. He is petitioning for me and my daughter and his birth certificate is required. Can a friend of the family do the translation or must it be done through a notary public or other recognized person?

I have translated my own documents and used that form to certify them. I haven't sent in the paperwork yet, but I'm being told by some who have that this is basically all that is needed.

First one will give you some information about the I-130 process. 2nd link is more detailed once you get your I-130 approved and get to the NVC stage.

And he doesn't need his original birth certificate. Instead he will have to make a copy of all the pages of his US passport and send that in along with a copy of his

Naturalization certificate. Of course if you have more questions about I-130 or anything else, you are free to ask them

Hmm... I don't know.. I wouldn't chance it if I were you. It doesn't cost that much to use a translator. USCTS.com is a very reliable firm that does this service. You can scan and upload the document you want translated and they email you a draft of the translation before they finalize everything. After that the certified translation is sent express mail so the whole process only takes a week or so. This is the company I used for my BC translation and have had no problems with USCIS.

But.. I guess it is up to you if you want to translate yourself

I am fluent in english and spanish, still decided not to take a chance and had an agency close to where I live translate the birth certificates and marriage certificate I paid 15 bucks for each one.

Just letting you know what I did, I'm sure that many people here have done it themselves and it has been ok.

i translated the birth and marriage certs myself from japanese to english.

it does not really matter too much who does it as long as they sign and certify it.

you can also take your translation to a lawyer or police department and pay money to have it notarized.

we only notarized our marriage cert at the tokyo usa embassy.

the embassy website also had downloadable translation forms that all you had to do was write in the information. it was really easy.

see if the embassy website has that for you too!

We need his birth certificate as he is petitioning for my daughter and according to the documents required at the Montreal interview, we need to present his birth certificate along with my daughter's.
