Deportation is not the only resolution for many cases involving immigrants who are here without proper documentation. Go read in the upper forums and you'll find many cases where someone was on an over-stayed visa, have since met someone and wish to remain here.

boo hoo for those as well.

There are laws and rules to follow in this situation.

Just because you "meet someone" or whatever other lame duck excuse you want to use to overstay your visa, doesn't change the fact that you OVERSTAYED your visa.

Go home and file the proper paperwork like everyone else.

If you are incapable of doing that, then get the hell out of this country and don't ever even think about coming back.

If you can't respect our laws before being granted the ability to be here for good, then don't even bother coming here at all.

Agreed on all counts. Unfortunately the guy is in a bad spot, because his parents took him along for the ride, thus excluding him from being able to exercise his rights as an intending immigrant under Federal Law.

The criminal bit was aimed to those who literally said he was a criminal, not you tmma, sorry for not clarifying.

How many times does it have to be stated that there is no "right" to immigrate to the USA?

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

So he needs to be angry with his parents. Harvard or not, you cannot expect the system to change to suit individuals. Furthermore, how convenient to play the well it's not his fault that his parents brought him here.

He was accepted into Harvard, therefore, is no idiot. Surely he knew the risk he was taking. Nevertheless, I am sure someone will pull strings and have him grated something.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

It's not unreasonable to look at the situation in terms of what is both pragmatic, and more importantly fair. Generally it is not considered acceptable to punish someone for the crimes of their parents.

Of course a lot of people here are emotionally invested in the subject of illegal immigration, so it's not surprising that not only is there little sympathy on display but outright hatred and derision.

No hatred at all actually, he simply needs to get out and wait in line, just like every other foreigner. Not to mention, think about paying back the free K-12 education he received.

Nevertheless, had e-verify been used to check anyone using government services, this is just another situation that would have been avoided.

Pleeease, it's not about justice, it's about upholding the law. Or do you suggest the law should apply differently depending on the person?

I thought one of the founding documents [principles] of this country states that no single individual is above the law.

PS Also funny how when it comes to ideals you hold dearly, like hate crimes, your compassionate side goes out the window. Then you want the book thrown at such people.

Or when it comes to things like torture or inspection of suspicious vessels in international waters.

No flexibility there, suddenly "the law" matters a whole lot more.

Fairness to whom?

And if such supposed "fairness" to one is weighed against fairness to many, which takes precedence? I'll take the many.

And if such supposed "fairness" is contrary to the law, which takes precedence? I'll take the law.

From the above quote, there are more reasons for him to be deported than there are for him to stay.

You mean fairness, as in everyone gets treated the same, under the law?

What? Since When ? What law do you want to quote, about that? I think you've tagged a new moniker, as well, for any 'immigrant' without proper documentation is not an immigrant, at all - he has a regular tag of 'illegal alien'.

Sure, I understand overstays are a different animal.

But EWI ? Come the #### on. It's time to go.

It's too bad that Steven and others who want this kid to stay aren't as interested in fairness and justice for the legal immigrants and USC's that illegals like him displace everyday in employment, limited student slots and other finite resources that this country has to offer. I have no respect for any school that claims that they educate the best and the brightest to be decent, law-abiding citizens when they encourage illegality and avoiding the consequences of your actions at the same time by supporting the undocumented. Sorry, that's talking out of both sides of your mouth and setting a bad example. They should be supporting our laws instead. But, hey, the elite don't believe that laws apply to them, and that's why they aren't even a bit ashamed of themselves.

Ya, this illegal alien bumped out a student on the scholarship award - where's the fairness and equity in that ?

An illegal alien got the scholarship, instead of one who qualified - where's the moral rightness in that?

An illegal alien was admitted into Harvard, using false papers for proving legal residency - you should be able to 'see the law' in that.

Harvard registrar office decided to accept him without vetting his legal status - and broke their own code of ethics.

If that's not apparent to you, trust me - it WILL be apparent to others in that 'decision loop', when they make the attempt to apply Konow's definition of Justice.
