yeah, 'fixed' sports are always interesting....

Not to say anything against Slovenia either (no offense really) but according to some sports analysts today who have looked into the nation, they've been under investigation before for paying people off and match-fixing... *shrugs*

Because fixed matches only ever occur in Footy?

Let's be honest. Really the only reason why soccer is a world sport, is it's a "cheap" sport to play. I mean that in the exact financial terms.... all you need is a ball and a field, and a group of people... pretty simple. That on top of that fact it is every man's sport and doesn't require larger size or extra athletic ability to be able to play...

Really other than that, there's no real rational reason why soccer is at all a sport to be taken seriously than many others.

As opposed to basketball where all you need is a court and a ball???

PS - I also think two reasons for its lack of popularity in the US are as such:

-too many other sports getting airtime....where does footy fit into all these other seasons?

-the US is used to a winner-loser at the end, and the fact that a match can end in a draw is sometimes quite underwhelming.

ahhhh someone has come in to tell us that "Americans don't care about soccer" it was only a matter of time....

Some people might be surprised to learn that in the US, the last European Cup (which obv the US wasn't in) had higher ratings than that year's Stanley Cup playoffs. It will never be as big as NFL or the NBA, but it's not true that no one cares

I wonder if this time there will be multiple bannings because of this thread like there was in 2006 after the Italy-Australia match!

I don't think his comment about being booed by their own fans was that off the wall....I'm sure it's frustrating, and very embarrassing.

Basketball and Ice Hockey don't count as US-only sports (even with the NBA entry above) because there are World Cup-type championships for national sides in those sports.

I was referring to the organizations(NFL,NBA,and NHL)and what the organizations call the championship games. Its called the Super Bowl,NBA Championship and the Stanely Cup.

I am a huge football fan and know many others and nobody refers to the Super Bowl champs as world champions.

Hey there. Yes it's true you can't generalize and say all Americans don't care about soccer. But you should have seen (or I don't know if you did) how hate comments flooded a simple yahoo article about the World Cup. I was so shocked and even saddened with all the hate comments. Somebody even said that only third world countries played soccer (can you imagine such ignorance-specially when soccer players in Europe make millions). But yes, I agree with your statement, unfortunately there are some that want to make believe that all Americans hate soccer.

America just can't handle to see a 90 minute game in just about that time. Seemingly, Americans need time to "digest" every piece of action during a game thus spending 3+ hours to watch 60 minutes of actual game time. And there are no commercials during a soccer game. Oh, the horror...

Soccer is the #1 sport played by little kids, at least around here... with baseball coming in 2nd. My boys have been playing since they were 3.
