So if either the US or England loses their next game they are out and Slovenia is in....interesting.

yeah, 'fixed' sports are always interesting....

Not to say anything against Slovenia either (no offense really) but according to some sports analysts today who have looked into the nation, they've been under investigation before for paying people off and match-fixing... *shrugs*

I think both England and Germany are feeling the absences of their respective, traditional captains. Sure, Beckham didn't do much but he brought something to the pitch. Whatever it was. England and US could still make it. They have do-or-die match ahead of them. US should've won today.

OS: America and US are the same thing. UK and England, however, aren't same thing. For people who didn't know.

If you watched the England match and caught where the camera panned to David Beckham in the dugout toward the end of the match, it was plain to see what he brought to the team. Heart. Miles and miles of heart (Gene Hackman in The Replacements).

And what he brought on the pitch was perhaps the best eye and passing ability in football. I don't know another player who could drop a ball from 60 yards away for a striker to run on to without breaking stride, time and again. England miss David Beckham (and have to make do with Frank Lampard :( ).

Who cares about the world cup? Soccer is glorified kickball you would play in PE class. They need to make a comedy of it like they did the Dodgeball movie!

Hey wives/husbands/SO's!! Do you have a problem? Is the only channel allowed on in your house ESPN? Has your husband/wife/fiancee turned into a zombie in a trance who pays no attention to you? If the only thing they do is ask you for more beer and chips, you may join this support group.

Funnily enough, more people care about the World Cup than don't.

Maybe because, for a change, an American team gets to measure itself against the best in the world in a sport the world plays, rather than the best in America, because the rest of the world doesn't give a flying burrito brother about the sport. ;)

I hate to clue you in but if the best athletes in the USA were to play kickball the rest of the world would not ever win a game. Thus it is a joke and a farce, you are playing below average talent athletes at best, which of course is why they play kickball, it is for lesser talented athletes

Let's be honest. Really the only reason why soccer is a world sport, is it's a "cheap" sport to play. I mean that in the exact financial terms.... all you need is a ball and a field, and a group of people... pretty simple. That on top of that fact it is every man's sport and doesn't require larger size or extra athletic ability to be able to play...

Really other than that, there's no real rational reason why soccer is at all a sport to be taken seriously than many others.

I dont really care if the world gives a flying burrito about our football. As a sport its very competitive. As a sports fan its very fun to watch. If people could get over this whole 'you barely use your foot so why call it football' mentality maybe they might like the sport.

Now I realize that zqt3344 is poking the bear but no need to bring America in this and try to make our sports seem stupid why arguing that soccer is the greatest. People always do this when the world cup comes around, it gets old.

What most American's don't realise is that their football team is pretty good. 14th in the FIFA world standings is not bad at all and you stand a better chance than England ( :( ) of progressing this time around.

As for the "foot" in football, some Americans really need a sense of humour implant, as they really can't tell when someone is winding them up. Of course the rest of the world thinks it's funny. How can you not, when "football" is played 99.5% of the time with the hands. It's a bit ironic.

Most people don't think American sports are stupid. I certainly don't. But calling things World Championships when you're the only country invited to the party (except the Canadians in Baseball) is just a little over-inflated.

The World Cup is just that, the best national teams in a sport played all over the world, playing to see who gets bragging rights for the next four years as World Cup holders. Remember, your guys are still in it.

I think when it comes to the World Cup most sport fans are aware of there chances in the World Cup. As far as FIFA rankings, sure most probably dont know there ranking. Many Americans grew up on football not soccer, its a huge part of our culture. Soccer never has been and it seems the rest of the world just cant grasp that thought.

About us using our hands 99.5% of the time... we would need more than a humor transplant to laugh at this, we would need a lobotomy. We have heard this so many times, its gets old.

I must agree to disagree. I think most people in the world look down at our version of football.

NFL,NBA and NHL do not call it world championships. MLB is the only organization that comes close, world series.

About the thumbs up, yeah I know were still in it and if you would go back and read my posts you would see that. I enjoy soccer but only watch it when the World Cup comes around because its on a world stage and its huge. Kind of like swimming, I watch it only during the Olympics.

NFL

Go nuts, New Orleans: The Saints are your world champions

NBA

NBA- It has been a long time since a real shakeup in NBA Champions. Since the 1979 season (26 titles including the 2004-2005 World Champion) only 7 different teams have been winners including the Los Angeles Lakers 8 times and the Chicago Bulls 6 times.

Link

Basketball and Ice Hockey don't count as US-only sports (even with the NBA entry above) because there are World Cup-type championships for national sides in those sports.

The Officiating of the world cup is a travesty! A total joke!
