Instant replay works reasonably well in the NHL, without necessarily stopping play (although there are stoppages in the game)....it also isn't limited to American sports since it's used in rugby and cricket.

The difference between those sports and NFL is that the coach can not order a review, which is what I believe can really slow things down in American football and would be a nightmare in the hands of someone like Alex Ferguson if that was ever allowed in football/soccer.

I think as things presently stand without using any kind of technology or ability to review play the sport does open itself up for corruption - as you had in the Italian league a few years back.

The difference is that all those sports have natural breaks in play which allows for replays, soccer does not. The basketball argument is moot for the mere reason that the game is actually scheduled around commercial breaks. This gives the networks and officials a bit of leeway to fit in the commercial breaks to cover the replays. I was at a game last year where there was a break for a replay of a disputed call. Soccer does not have these breaks. Instituting in-game replay is absolutely horrible idea. It would destroy the fluid gameplay and speed of the game. I will agree that some sort of goal line sensor, or even 2 additional officials whose sole role is to watch the goaline is a good idea. In the meantime, they already have cameras in the goals which could be consulted. But my issue is how much time can they use to view the footage before it interrupts the game. Could something like this be reviewed in under a minute while the ball is being reset after a goal?

I don't watch MLS, but if anyone here does, do they have commercial breaks during the game (not halftime)?

Exactly. Once you allow instant replay and ####### like that, a soccer game will last 3 hours, 1.5 of those filled with commercials. End of the sport around he world except in the US. No sane institution would lose hundreds of millions of fans for a few million. Simple as that.

That will be tough. The teams that are eliminated in the quarter finals (BR GER and AR) usually don't get to play for the title.

Fixed

Interesting. Can you explain how are both GER and AR are going to be eliminated in the quarter finals? Last I checked, GER and ARG will face each other in that round. Only one of them will go. And that, if there's a God, will be ARG.

I think we FIFA should implement laser sensors around the field.. and probably bring R2D2 to assist :help: .. LOL

People, forget about new edge technology in soccer.. Right now those errors are so fantastic, specially for the winning team, [Argentina please, agree with this  ]

I do agree, FIFA should provide a little extra assistance in the field..

"Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty." -- NAPF page on Oscar Romero
