You are completely discounting the effects of momentum and flow of the game. You could do it on goals, because there is a short break while they reset play. But you would need to do it within 45 seconds or so, otherwise, you run the risk of interupting the flow of the game.

Goals have always been my biggest concern when addressing this topic. I mentioned earlier that it shouldnt be a hundred instant replays, just in critical moments. I even suggested just putting 2 more refs on the field and you wouldn't go for that either. You tried to make the argument that the field wasnt big enough.

I know about the flow, look at American basketball.

Is your fear of the American way not letting you see the obvious problem we have in FIFA?

So would you be for refs looking at controversial goals and overturning them?

Simpson, it's almost comical that you're suggesting these sweeping changes to the game. A game that you admitedly are a neophyte about. You don't understand the why the game is so wildly popular, as well as why games like american football get such paltry support abroad. I didn't respond when you spoke about it earlier because your suggestion about in-game replay is absolutely absurd.

I agree...in-game replay would kill the game and I am totally against it. I do think they need to come up with something that can sense if the ball passes the line though. In 2010 that is really ridiculous that incidents like England-Germany still occur...I know it doesn't matter anymore at this point, but in the last (disgraceful) Italy game the exact same thing happened even though less obvious...I am a complete idiot when it comes to this technology stuff, but there's gotta be a way to detect if the ball goes past the line!

Rob its obvious you didnt digest what I had said earlier. I said I dont watch soccer a lot but in the past I have played a lot of soccer. Go back and read, its there ;)

I personally dont think you addressed the NBA argument because you dont know nothing about the way NBA does it. Sure you might of went to Google by now and have a mild understanding. You really shouldn't be so closed minded. Dont let your hatred for what you think the 'American way'is cloud your judgement.

I think you're mistaking me with someone else. When you started in on the in-game replay, i saw it for what it is, asinine. More officials means more penalties and slows the flow. There have been several despicable calls in this world cup, but by and large, it has been well officiated. The only thing they need is either some sort of sensors on the goal that can tell if the ball breaches the plane or an official dedicated to just watching the goal line.

be careful to what your agreeing to. I have suggested more refs and goal line cams. Like I said before the ref will be done figuring out the goal call before the players are finished. Rob has shot down every idea I have come up with to solve this obvious problem and it seems he wants no change.

Simpson, you are furthering you're own ignorance. keep it up. Sorry, i'm at work, and i'm not inclined to go back and read 30 pages of this thread. I haven't kept up on it sporatically. If you can link me to the posts where you talk about the NBA, i'll read it, but i'm not going to read a novel length thread to pour through some threads where blather on about NBA, which by the way I am a big fan of, so your jab there holds no weight.

Again simpson, you are either lazy, ignorant, or confused. I have said nothing of the sort. I commented about your insipid idea about in-game replays.

I know exactly what I am agreeing to...and I thought I was clear about it :)

So you being a big fan you had to have noticed the replays have not devastated the flow. When I first brought up NBA the you didnt reply. A few minutes ago when I asked why you didnt you replied with something along the lines that the mere thought of it was ridiculous.

Just so were clear, my concern is with goal calling. Sure it wouldn't hurt to have a few more refs on the field and I hope one day that changes.

You're right about one thing. It wasnt you trying to make the argument that the field wasnt big enough for a few more refs it was Big Dog.

So having a ref look at the video of the goal why the players are celebrating isn't something you could agree to?

No, sorry. As I stated above, they need to come up with an instant solution...like some sort of sensor that can "sense" the ball has gone through the very moment it IS GOING through, not sure I make sense I am having some sort of language barrier here lol...watching videos could take forever, having more refs could potentially generate even more wasting time because of more heads that would need to agree on something dubious...also it would be a "tool" teams could use and request every time they try to contest something...having watched soccer for a very long time I think it would be a recipe for disaster, due the nature and dynamics of this sport. Then again I am not saying I am right and you are wrong, it is just my opionion for what it's worth :star:

Yes true it could cause some problems. I just think if is implemented correctly it could be useful.

You brought up some good points about more refs on the field. I will have to take that into consideration.

As far as instant replay goes I would suggest it only be at the referees discretion and only on scored goals. Have a referee watching video of the game and if in this situation when a goal is made and a mistake has been made the ref in the booth calls down to the field and has a field ref take a look at it. I think this all could be done before the team ends its celebration.

Instant replay works reasonably well in the NHL, without necessarily stopping play (although there are stoppages in the game)....it also isn't limited to American sports since it's used in rugby and cricket.

The difference between those sports and NFL is that the coach can not order a review, which is what I believe can really slow things down in American football and would be a nightmare in the hands of someone like Alex Ferguson if that was ever allowed in football/soccer.

I think as things presently stand without using any kind of technology or ability to review play the sport does open itself up for corruption - as you had in the Italian league a few years back.

I think limits like 2 challenges per team a game could work in soccer without interfering with the game. Most of the time the challanges would be used for goal shots and wouldn't disturb the game.

I would also be ok if only refs could decide to review the play.

I remember back when the NFL didnt have a limit on instant replays. It sucked because the coach would challenge every play he didnt like. The system in affect now is much better. I really didn't like it at all when the NFL got rid of the instant replay altogether.

There has been talk of sensors in the ball, it's not a novelty but it hasn't been ruled on yet.

In Rio they're already using an assistant ref behind each goal post, but again, that's only being used in Brazilian soccer.
