They claim the popularity of the sport includes these controversies, and say that installing cameras in all stadiums would be too costly and would slow down the game too much.

I don't really buy their arguments - it just sounds like a bunch of old geezers who don't like the idea of change.

It is ridiculous when you consider that virtually every other professional sport out there recognises the need for precision in determining outcomes.

I don't either, seriously, just add assistants behind each goal post, that would help a lot.

It is a farce - there was a famous England game in the 60s where it was unclear whether or not the ball had crossed the line; but now they actually have TV cameras behind the goal that home audiences can see the it blatantly was a goal, it seems silly to carry on like this.

At a press conference yesterday FIFA representatives actually argued that the screens on field must not show controverted plays, as it was by watching the screen that the mexicans, for instance, saw that Tevez was offsided. They are completely against technology being used on these plays.

They should at least increase the number of assistants on the field, to place one behind the goal and one at the edges to check who's offsided or not. Two assistants that run the course of the field are way too few.

I totally agree with.. They should have more assistance..

We can’t argued that since the beginning of soccer, we had bad calls.. all over the word. whether is local or international games.. this makes the game unfair and excited at the same time..

Incorporating the auto/instant replay will completely change the face of this game.. Maradona scored with his hand in 1986 and capture the world, unfairly?. This year Tevez score against Mexico and he was totally of line, unfairly?.. Hey, but this is not the first or last time this will happens.. is a very competitive sport.

The game has not change for the past 3000 years, we should not change it but implement better ways to maintain the nature and history of the sport, but instant reply may not be the best way to overcome the human errors.

Dag, Brazil vs. Chile today...

"Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty." -- NAPF page on Oscar Romero

I'm not an old geezer. I am behamothly against the usage of cameras, instant replay in the sports of soccer. One ref and two linesman with one extre official are just enough. No need to add more. Refs decisions are final. If the ref is biased, fire him. Punish him. Burn him at the stake. But for sake of the love the sports, no instant replay.

Since USA lost, I have lost my interest in this World Cup. I didn't watch any of the matches yesterday or today. I might watch the final but that's a might. I hope Germany kicks everyone's collective #######. Or Spain. I'll be happy with anyone except Brasil and Argentina.

The game has changed often since FIFA was formed. Here are just a few of the changes:

1) Offside rule has changed. Now there is a concept of Active vs Passive

2) 3 substitutes are allowed. It used to be two + goalkeeper.

3) Backpass to the goalkeeper was banned in the early '90s

4) Fouling an attacker when he is on a clear run to the goal gets a red card - it wasn't always so

5) The Golden Goal Rule has been toyed with many times. Italy got dumped out of the 2002 world cup on the golden goal rule. But now there is no such rule.

So it is not like FIFA never changes anything.

Surely they can try goal-line technology. At one time they were working on adding chips in the balls and sensors on the goals but gave up.

What is so special about football that it shouldnt hold itself to precision standards unlike every other sport?

We already have stoppage time, why would a replay slow the game?

Where does it end, though? Next we'll have replays of fouls and challenges on referree decisions there. Leave the girlie stuff out of soccer. Bad calls are made from time to time. Such calls quite possibly handed England the only World Cup victory they've ever seen and quite possibly cost Germany what would have been it's second title. So what? The ball is still round and the game has gone on and is enjoyed by hundreds of millions for decades all the same. Sometimes a bad call goes against you, sometimes it favors you. In the end, it all evens out. No biggie.

Why should goal line cameras lead to a slippery slope? I don't see that at all - if a ball has to cross a line in order to score a goal then surely it makes sense to use the technology to determine whether or not that has happened.

They brought the system into tennis to avoid john mcenroe style blowups about bad line decisions. Bad calls still happen, but in professional sports it seems crazy to omit precision standards and leave the outcomes up to bad officiating.

Exactly. With or without technology, bad calls will happen. If it isn't the goal line, then it's the off-site, and then it's yet something else that will be disputed and calls will be made to introduce this, that or the other technology to rectify additional opportunities for bad calls. It'll never end. And bad calls will continue all the same. One day, we'll have a computer make the call and then there will be claims that FIFA allowed someone to hack into the system and manipulate it to one team's favor. It's all girlie and geeky stuff. Leave that to the girls and geeks and leave soccer to the guys.

I don't buy that. The ref still gets to call offside or a foul and those things are subjective. Tracking the ball crossing a line has no impact that I can see.

I don't see any rational reason for not doing this other than that people are stubborn and don't like change.
