Mexico gunmen 'kill 19' in rehab centre raid

Page last updated at 14:31 GMT, Friday, 11 June 2010 15:31 UK

Gunmen have stormed a rehabilitation centre in a Mexican city, shooting dead 19 people and wounding at least four others, police say.

The killings happened in the northern city of Chihuahua, about 210 miles (350km) south of Ciudad Juarez and the border with El Paso, Texas.

One report said up to 30 gunmen were involved in the attack.

Chihuahua has been at the centre of a turf war between drugs cartels fighting over lucrative smuggling routes.

Chihuahua state police spokesman Fidel Banuelos said the attackers had left messages accusing the victims of being criminals.

The attack took place on Thursday night, but has only just been reported.

An unnamed police official told AFP news agency that "more than 30 gunmen arrived aboard six trucks".

They moved to the second floor of the Templo Cristiano Fe y Vida (Christian Faith and Life Temple) and fired large-calibre weapons at patients and employees before fleeing, the official said.

Previous attacks

Rehabilitation centres in Mexico have been the target of previous attacks.

In September 2009, 10 people were killed in an attack on a centre in Ciudad Juarez. It came weeks after a similar attack in the same city killed another 18.

Correspondents say such shootings are blamed on drug traffickers, who accuse the clinics of protecting dealers from rival gangs.

Last year, Chihuahua state security minister, Victor Valencia de los Santos, said that rehab centres had become the breeding ground for criminal gangs.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Banuelos? Valencia de los Santos? With names like that, you just know they up to no good! In fact, if you take a gander at the FBI's Most Wanted list, most of them have those kinds of names too.

build a border?

Well it's not just people looking for work exploiting the open border.

As per usual, point?

Wow, how horrible.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

where is the outrage?

oh wait ... this is acceptable because it doesn't involve crossing an international border ...

It's not that hard to understand even if it is a double standard. Peoples have a lot more tolerance to endure abuse from their own kind than from outsiders. Be it a different race, religion, nationality, etc. Welcome to the real world where people do notice such things. Not everyone looks at others as being equal in this regard, but they won't ever admit it.

An example would be that a black is far less outraged at a black on black murder than if a white murdered a black. It's been that way since the beginning of time.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

Time to legalize drugs to stop the carnage. The loss of life in Mexico, and everywhere else that is as a result of drug related gangsterism is just horrible.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

Where does race enter the equation here when it happpened in Mexico with Mexicans killing each other?

Correct. We do however give me publicity to Americans killed abroad and we have daily stories about our troops killed in wars aboard. Other nationalities do the same thing as Mexicans, for example, get angrier if one of their people is killed by an American yet they have more violence in Mexico.

These are gangs who are fighting for power, therefore, even if you take drugs as a revenue stream away, they will move onto something else. Then what? Many who hold the same view will move onto some other scapegoat, as you have done with national issues here; all while never actually addressing the real problem - Mexico.

Contrary to popular belief, gangs didn't just materialize after narcotics; however, much like plant fertilizer, the easy money made off narcotics funded and encouraged their operations. Furthermore, we have gangs here, why don't they go up shooting up 20 to 30 people or behead people weekly? No different to the well if you hadn't gone to Iraq, they wouldn't be beheading people rhetoric. I just don't get that attitude.

I like trial and error. Lets do what you propose and see what happens. Otherwise until then, you guys will beat on and on about the same thing.

With the 2nd and 3rd world being the worst offenders. No one is going to demand the death of the French if a German dies in France.

My apple picking jobs? Surely you can come up with a wittier cheap shot from the peanut gallery than that.

I was responding to Natty's post. He asked why no outrage over many times worst and all too common Mexican on Mexican violence versus them going ballistic over a rare single killing by an American Border Patrol officer. I answered the question adequately.
