I'm blaming both. Go to any oil drilling site and ask them to recite Federal regulations. I guarantee you most employees will be able to list them all of the top of their head. The rules really are damn strict.

The point I'm making is, what's the point of having such regulation if the government inspectors can be easily bought off with little perks? THAT is the problem.

The regulation works, the regulation is fine. The problem is people being able to get by with buying off other people and then those who accept the bribes as well.

It takes two to tango.

What about the cleanup and handling of this mess? Who the hell digs a whole one mile in the ocean and doesn't bother to have a number of tried and tested backup plans, fail-safe devices and measures? Furthermore, actually prepare for the worse.

The video above illustrates the same damn company, had the same damn issue 30 bloody years ago. How can they fail so epically after 30 years? Especially when they have already experienced the same epic failure before - yet in 200 feet.

Between wars and spills, I have had it up to here with this [literally] shitty substance.

Hmm, this reminds me of the EU's billion dollar cases against US corporations. What did they call it again? Being anti-competitive. I wonder if they will go after BP for destroying an entire region. Or is that not that much of a big deal versus Microsoft having a dominant market share. That on the other hand, is just wrong wrong wrong.

Truth be told the equivalent disaster in EU waters would automatically result in billion Euro fines for US companies. On top of paying for the entire cleanup cost.

This video from Maddow of all people hit the nail on the head. How bloody stupid can we be? How many times do we need to piss on the electric fence before we realize it hurts? Why the hell is the American way to always be reactive rather than proactive?

Well BP should certainly be penalised, but I don't think it's unreasonable to wonder what Transocean's share of the responsibility is.

I'm sure the boys at BP are busy figuring that out. BP contracted Transocean but from all I've read, BP called the shots. They're sure free to hold any of their contractors liable - if they can - but the American people ought to be made whole by BP.
