"Change" we can believe in alright. Idiotic shotgun reaction bullshit we've been seeing now for quite awhile. So stupid.

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama said Thursday that the ongoing oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has highlighted the inadequacy of current environmental pollution laws, and urged Congress to move forward with a series of changes in an "aggressive, forward-leaning way."

He made his remarks during a White House meeting with the bipartisan congressional leadership.

"At the top of our list was our continued response to the crisis in the Gulf," Obama said at the end of the meeting. "We had a frank conversation about the fact that the laws that have been in place have not been adequate for a crisis of this magnitude."

The president specifically mentioned the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which Democrats have strongly criticized for imposing a $75 million oil spill liability cap.

The law "was passed at a time when people didn't envision drilling four miles under the sea for oil," Obama said. "And so it's going to be important that ... we update the laws to make sure that the people in the Gulf, the fishermen, the hotel owners, families who are dependent for their livelihoods in the Gulf, that they are all made whole and that we are in a much better position to respond to any such crisis in the future."

Obama used the Gulf crisis to promote his alternative energy agenda, which is still bogged down in Congress.

It is "my personal belief that we have to move on an energy agenda that is forward-looking, that creates jobs, that assures that we are leaders in solar, wind and biodiesel," he said. "We are going to still be using oil and we're still going to be using other fossil fuels, but ... we have to start planning now ... so that we end up being leaders in our energy future."

The president was also slated to discuss his energy plans with a group of business leaders Thursday afternoon. In addition, he was scheduled to meet with relatives of the workers who were killed in the April 20 BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf.

I think destroying the entire Gulf, is a good reason to change policy.

Though Paul, I thought the private sector had this sort of stuff down pat and didn't need any more regulation. What day is this epic private failure on again?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

This was a joint failure. The government officials inspecting the rigs were easily bought off. So you have two guilty parties here.

They did change policy! the gov told them to go further out has not to make an eyesore of those ugly rigs. without thinking about the consequences of an accident. If it was in 399 feet of water it would be a non-issue.

Knee jerk policy changes to make the anointed one look good is fvcking LAME! Meanwhile the oil still gushes.

Nah, we'll just look back 30 years from now when a larger disaster happens and wonder why nothing was done in response to this one. Much like we had a very similar incident in the Gulf some 40 years ago that we haven't learned a first damn thing from. It's the American way.

Dude come on now. You do everything to shift the blame from private. I actually heard one guy I know say that the libs did this themselves - aka sabotage . #######?

This disaster illustrates that nothing of national importance should ever be left to some private sector alone. Even if we fine them or jail them for life, the gulf coast of America - your country - is destroyed.

A million gallon of crude gushes from the Gulf each day and my life has remained quite unchanged. Who cares is the attitude I would take if I didn't care. But I care... about America, about the Gulf, about the world. The most important thing to do now is not to pass new laws or to assign blame. The most important thing is to stop this oil from gushing and to clean up. Once that's done progressive and restrictive regulations must be enacted to combat any such failures in future. The regulations are in place are either irrelevent or weren't applied properly. First try to see if such things can be prevented with the current regulations. If it can be with better implementations, why pass more rules?

Already happened actually.

This video from Maddow of all people hit the nail on the head. How bloody stupid can we be? How many times do we need to piss on the electric fence before we realize it hurts? Why the hell is the American way to always be reactive rather than proactive?

Yeah, ####### is right. "The government officials were bought off?" I thought we didn't need any government officials to begin with?

Maybe they spent too much money buying off government officials and didn't have any left to comply with EPA security standards?

Honestly, that video above from rug muncher hit the nail on the head. These clowns spent billions figuring out how to drill deeper but still use the same stupid [failed] tactics from 30 years ago. If anyone recalls, the second day of the disaster, I asked myself why did they not have an second well drilled in the first place? For emergencies like this; basically, ready to go if or when something like this happens. And I don't even know the slightest thing about oil.

After all these failed attempts, the only thing that will work is another bloody well drilled by August.

That's got to be the first intelligent thing you've said since you joined VJ.

I'm blaming both. Go to any oil drilling site and ask them to recite Federal regulations. I guarantee you most employees will be able to list them all of the top of their head. The rules really are damn strict.

The point I'm making is, what's the point of having such regulation if the government inspectors can be easily bought off with little perks? THAT is the problem.

The regulation works, the regulation is fine. The problem is people being able to get by with buying off other people and then those who accept the bribes as well.

It takes two to tango.

Nah. It's just the first thing that you agree on with me. Everything I said are very intelligent. But, you, like most people incorrectly define intelligence as anything agreeable or anything that supports your own viewpoint and outlooks on life.
