HI,

We finish sending all the documents and form to the NVC and now are waiting for the consulate (Montreal) to pass the medical and the interview.

Meanwhile I'm trying to figure out what to bring with me once the Visa is approved.

My husband will come and pick me up in Montreal and we will put all my things in is car. But, how does it work, What am I allowed to bring with me? Like furniture, bed, electronics, clothe...? Is there some sort of rule or limit of things I can bring with me, like I can bring for 1500$ worth of things.. Or is it taxable?

I'm just trying to figure out this now so I can be ready if I have to sell/give stuff that I can not bring...

Thanks

You could bring a Moving Van load if that is what you have  (I did). There is no 'limit' on the amount of personal items you can bring, although there are restrictions on certain things, such as alcohol, tobacco, liquer filled chocolates, lottery tickets (it is a very interesting list!). Anything that has been in your possession for over a year is allowed in duty free. While technically you are supposed to pay duty on anything less than a year old I have never heard of anyone being asked to do so when moving on a K or CR-1 visa. Just make sure you have a 'list' of the items or list of boxed contents (eg. box of 'books' - no need to identify individual items, etc.), but again, they probably won't even check that. If you have house plants, they do require a phytosanitary certificate issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, but that is easy to get as well. Dogs require proof of rabies vaccination, parrots and some reptiles require a CITES certificate, and all pets must appear to be in good health at the border.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thanks a million that was exactly what I was looking for. Wow, thanks very helpful, now I know, I was thinking of buying a bed here and bring it with me but if it has to be less than a year to pass as duty free I will buy it in NY..

Thank you!!
