Humanist Ceremony Legalities? US/UK

Hope someone can give some advice as interweb searches have turned up little....

I am from the US, my fiance is from the UK (England). Been planning our wedding for November in England, and then he is planning to move to the US through all the legal channels (CR-1 immigrant visa). We've tossed around the idea of getting married in Scotland, in a private and personal Humanist ceremony, which would mean more to us as a couple, then still doing the "official" celebration in November.

However, I'm a little confused by the legal status of Humanist weddings; they are recognized in the US as valid, but not by England. Wondered if anyone had dealt with this particular concern, as the big wedding bash in November would either then be the "first" marriage (in England's eyes) or a reaffirmation? And what would this mean for all the immigration bit - could we start the paperwork if we had a US-recognized Humanist marriage? It's a bit like doing a civil ceremony months before a religious one, except one country doesn't acknowledge the first ceremony as legally binding. So confusing....
