My advice is, tell them the truth. Tell them where your passports are, bring some proof of applying for your visa - like the NOA2 and a copy of your interview letter.

Have a good trip!

they probably won't even ask to see the passports if you have the enhanced DL...

Starting June 1, 2009, Canadian citizens traveling to the U.S. by land or sea are required to present one of the travel documents listed below.

Canadian Passport – This is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies a person’s identity and citizenship. It is accepted for travel by air, land and sea.

Enhanced Driver’s Licence/Enhanced Identification Card– Canadian provinces have begun issuing these documents that denote identity and citizenship that are WHTI-compliant for cross-border travel into the U.S. by land or sea.

Trusted Traveler Programs – NEXUS, FAST/Expres and SENTRI enrollment cards can speed your entry into the U.S. and are issued only to pre-approved travelers. FAST/Expres cards are valid for use at land or sea ports of entry; the NEXUS card can be used at land or sea ports of entry and at kiosks at participating airports.

Special Groups – Children, Groups of Children, Native Americans, Ferries and Small Boats, and Boaters.

If they ask - and like Marilyn said, they probably won't even ask - you have no choice but to tell them the truth.

If for some strange reason they asked to see your passport - you just have to say that you don't have them with you and you thought the driver's license and ID card were sufficient. That is the truth.

You would only tell them about Montreal if they specifically ask where your passport is (although why they would ask this I don't know, doesn't really make sense).

But if it gets to that point just tell all - you have no other choice except to tell the truth, so just accept that. I'm concerned if you don't you are going to look nervous and they will know that. You have zero reason to be nervous, you aren't doing anything wrong.

If you look at that first link Marilyn gave you, you will see that children only need the birth certificate.

Hi Smurfette1971,

If you and your family have Enhanced Driver's Licenses, you should have no problem travelling to the USA by land, as that is an acceptable form of identification for people over 18. For those under 18, a Canadian or US Birth certificate is sufficient for land travel to the USA. Though for air travel, passports are required, so plan accordingly if you are travelling by air instead.

Likewise, I and my husband have NYS Enhanced Drivers Licenses and travel across the border by land with no problems. In fact, as US Citizens, we all still don't have US Passports! Our 10 month old son has a US Birth Certificate, and we have no problems traveling by land with him either. Lol..I thought about getting an EDL ID for my son too (yes, they do minors too, here in NYS), but I'm going to wait until he's a bit older for that.

The bottom line: Enhanced Driver's Licenses and Birth Certificates= Good to travel to the USA by land! (and actually, Enhanced Driver's License are better than passports, in my opnion).

Hope this helps. Good luck with your journey and enjoy your summer vacation in Texas too.
