Thanks, ladies

Lisa, interesting that you see me in the maniacal shot!

One from a few days ago. She's looking very grown up in her hat. The teething bunny doesn't know what he's in for!

Aw thanks!

So, little Madeleine is growing up! We "upgraded" to level 2 nipples yesterday, and she seems to be doing fine with them. She's still spitting up after feedings, but not as much as before (she's 3 1/2 months). All in all, things are getting easier, but she still isn't sleeping through the night. When this finally happens, I think we'll throw a party. I know it's normal at this stage to wake up several times a night, tho. We had a couple of teasers a few weeks ago...9:30-6 twice in a week. I was hopeful that a trend was starting, but no such luck. The last few weeks, she's been up anywhere between 11:45 and 2, sometimes to eat, sometimes for a snuggle, sometimes for the bink. Up again at 3 or 4, who knows why.

Speaking of the bink, what are people's thoughts? Madeleine is already somewhat dependent on it to chill out in the swing, and we've starting putting her to bed with one because it really calms her down to sleep. I know she's really young, but I wonder if I should think about weaning her off it once she starts eating food and is on a more regular sleeping and eating schedule? My main concern is that she'll get to the point where she can't soothe herself without it, and I don't want it to turn into one of those situations you hear about where she's up six times a night crying when it falls out.

Aww - bless her! I think you'll find their sleep will change in phases. Em started sleeping through the night around 6 weeks old, but she'll have some weeks where she'll wake up in the night (like this one) and others where we never hear a peep out of her for 12 hours. There are also these fabulous things called 'sleep regressions' at different stages. I think there is one at 5 months, 7 months, etc. But I think when she does start sleeping through the night, it will stick for the most part. Some kids are just later with this than others.

I would really wean her off the bink as soon as you can, at least as far as using it to put her to sleep. Our pedi told us that at her 4 month appointment - luckily for us, Emily was never that interested in it (seems like she figured out it didn't give her FOOD when she chewed on it...how dare we!). I've also read on my baby message board where mothers are just having a hell of a time with it for the reasons you describe. Self soothing is definitely the way to go. The earlier you can implement it, the better - but if she's not sleeping thru the night anyway, you probably won't hurt yourselves by waiting until she's ready for solids.

Honestly Em never uses one. We have one in her pack and play which she will occasionally pick up and play with - but she rarely puts the right end in her mouth. :P

I always told myself it was growth spurts. I couldn't get mad at the wee one - he almost had a tougher time with it than I did.

I have always been against binkies because I was never sure what the pros/cons were and didn't want to give my son one. We tried a bit on the rough nights and he didn't like them, so I was pretty happy about that. Every baby is going to be different though. I think the most important thing is to do what YOU need to do to maintain/regain your SANITY!!!!!!!!!! If Limita is absolutely wearing you out and the binkie helps keep you calmer, use it. Being an overstressed parent isn't good for anyone.

Good luck!

The pacifiers have definitely been useful, especially when she was teeny, but I think now, or in the next few weeks, is a good time to think about giving them up. It's often more trouble than it's worth now because it's forever falling out. Just as an experiment, I haven't (or, more accurately, she hasn't) used it at all today, and the fuss (knock on wood) has been minimal. I guess the test will be how she does tonight.

I'm sure I'll curse this, but Limita slept from 9 ish last night until nearly 7 this morning! I took the bink out of her mouth last night as soon as she fell asleep. She hasn't slept that long for weeks. I don't think the bink has anything to do w/ it though...she's getting close to four months, and she's also getting over a mild cold.

Oh yeah, I hope I didn't sound like 'wean her now or be damned!' LOL. Obviously even if you decide to wean, you're still going to have to use it some for your OWN SANITY! My MIL got all over me about using the paci in the car to soothe Emily to sleep when she was about 6 weeks old (they cause colic, doncha know??!) and I said if you have any other ideas how to keep her quiet, you be sure to let me know! But it was shortly after that where Em stopped taking it all together.

I would love for us to start using this thread as a 'mommy catch all.' I feel more at home here, too, than the OT baby thread - and certainly more supported by the ladies here.

All are welcome, really. We just want fun banter and helpful suggestions/solutions.

And its ok Lisa - we won't kick you out even though Nick isn't a half Blighter. :P Do you find his toothy grin to be cuter than the 'gummy one' or? :)
