According to the poverty guidelines, you should find if you will be supporting your fiancee alone.

Right, there is no amount that needs to be in the bank in order to sponsor an immigrant. No worries! I have found in doing this process that most people out there don't really know anything about immigration but like to give you their opinion anyway...unless it's someone who has actual sponsored a fiance/spouse...I just smile politely and nod.

$10,000 USD in the bank????????? Never heard that one before. If it were true I don't think too many visas would be issued!

You need to meet the poverty guidelines established in I-864P as posted on the USCIS web site. If your income falls short then you must have qualified and accesable assets to meet the difference in shortfall (there is a multiplier involved when using assets too).

I'm not to well versed in explaining how the assests thing works. I can tell you that I certainly did not have 10,000 USD in my bank account though (maybe 3,000) however my income is approx 3x the required poverty level established.

Could you please GO BACK to that person at your work, and ask her EXACTLY where she saw that ? (I do mean exact)

For now, study the I-134 form, and study the computations used in the I-864 form. That will help you assess your personal income and assets, see if you fall above or below the poverty line guidelines.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Everyone else, please correct me if I'm wrong... but I don't think you need to show that amount in a bank account.

I believe that you just need to prove that you will be able to support your fiance and yourself (at 125% above poverty level is a safe bet)

You do this by showing employment/salary verification and recent tax return.

No need for bank statements

Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong.. :P

Just to clarify, by tax return I mean your 1040 and w-2 (and 1090 if applicable)

and by employment verification I mean a letter from your employer stating that you indeed work there and how much you make.

Plus I think some people have also submitted paystubs as well.

Don't worry - I doubt most of us had (or currently have, for that matter!) $10k in the bank when starting this process. I certainly didn't have anywhere near that and my (now) husband is here! You're good to go :)

Just wondering.. when you say you wanted to sponsor your fiance, is your fiance here in the US?

Wanted to make sure you go through the proper immigration route and forms because it is slightly different for different cases ;)
