Thai teachers fail

I don't know how Thais would respond to this, but my wife was a HS teacher and got the 2008 award for best teacher for her province.

Her major was in Thai and minor in English at the university.

She was asked to review PhD candidates for Thai language at Chula U.

One thing I did discover in many many visits to her high school was that

the Thai teachers of English could hardly speak English as expected of

an English teacher, and they were very jealous of her to the point where

they blocked any suggestion by the director to let her teach English because

her English was so much better than theirs. She taught only Thai until she retired.

Some of the administrators would speak with me but rarely an English teacher.

She was glad to retire early as the "political" part of the job was a little stressful,

despite the fact that she was universally liked by the students.

It all has to do with "face." This makes lots of sense in the context of thai culture

My ex-wife was Japanese and I've been there 3 times.

The "Japlish" advertising signs and the pseudo-English found

in every imaginable venue in Japan are positively hilarious.

Some of the nonsensical and comical English expressions observed on T-shirts in Japan include "Champion Boy in Bloom," "Let's Joy," "Passion for Street," "Dog Action," "Summer is Born of the Passion of 1921," "Snot House," "Dreamfashion Expects 100% Powerful Action," "Planter's Pinch," "Afternoon Coffee Brake," "The Real McCloy" and "Ivy's League." Japanese products with strange English names include Crunky chocolate bars, Creap coffee creamer and Pocari Sweat sports drink. Among the Japanese pop music artists with strange names are Bump of Chicken, Scoop on Somebody, Do As Infinity, Mr. Children, Rip Slyme, Bonnie Pink and Ego-Wrappin'.

You'll find many such "malaprops" in Bangkok, but not half as many as you'll find in Tokyo.

My last trip to Japan was probably around 20 years ago so I don't know what saatii waan is but

when in Thailand I like to make the trips to "Swensens" as few as possible due to our waistline issues.

I prefer Swensens to Baskin Robbins when in Thailand but I try to avoid BR in the states, I'll

get ice cream only occasionally from the supermarket.

I absolutely love Japan; unfortunately my marriage to a Fukuoka native did not work out well.

I used to have fantasies of retiring in Japan and managing her parents' "Ofuru-Ya" in my golden years.

Those dreams have been replaced by other more attainable ones with regard to Thailand.
