WW3 isn't going to start over Afghanistan, it's going to start over Israel. Duh!

In all seriousness, I highly doubt we'll have so much as a squabble with the Russians over anything near Afghanistan. While they keep an eye on that region, they already have that T-shirt and they're not going to go back to get the newest and freshest design. However, going left a little on the map, you'll see an area that's about two rockets away from complete implosion.

While it's one thing to piss off Syria and Jordan, Lebanon, etc., it's quite another to piss off Turkey. If you think Afghanistan is a "crossroads of civilization," Turkey is next on that list. I can guarantee you if Israel and Turkey start butting heads the U.S. is going to be in more than just a pickle because we're going to have to finally choose a side. And so is Russia. That's the scary part.

If luck is on the world's side, we'll all choose the same side. But... luck be a lady tonight. 2012 very well could be the final song and dance.

You're right on target here. Why would Russia go to war against us over Afghanistan? If they want to maintain order in Afghanistan, they can have it. "Ransom of Red-chief" comes to mind.

And you're right on Israel, too. If Turkey sends ships to Gaza, and Israel doesn't flinch that really could be WW3. But I think Turkey knows that and knows that Israel wouldn't flinch so they won't do it. On the other hand, Russia is definitely trying to move towards Europe. We'll see how far things have gone today. If Russia supports strong sanctions against Iran, it will be a huge step.
