When I was shopping in a furniture store the other day, I used the word "about" in a sentence. She froze, then said "Are you Canadian?" Then I froze and said "How did you know?" She said there's a Canadian she works with and they pronounce that word exactly the same way. So yay. There's a fellow Canadian living here somewhere.

I had the same experience at the local hardware store. The fellow helping me commented I pronounced it with a French accent; then proceeded to tell me how much he liked Rush and Triumph! Boy he was aging both of us with that one! laughing.gif

about.

I'm sorry. I just can't hear the accent. lol

Me either :) At least you didn't say 'a boot'.

I was presenting something recently and afterwards a women came up and asked if I was by chance Canadian because I said 'pro-cess' instead of 'pra-cess'. She was very sweet about it and said she was from Detroit so she'd been over the border a fair bit.

I've figured out that my trigger words are: out, about and sorry. Aparently I elongate my o's (not like a boot - more like sawry). Took me forever to figure it out.

Always made my shift at the hospital when people asked what part of canada I was from!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Awwww..that sucks Kimbear. I have been away from Si a few times, but fortunately I have never been alone. It would suck. It is good you have to dogs to keep you company/busy! Go out and treat yourself to something like a pedicure and give yourself some 'me' time!!

I agree. Go and get a pedicure! Or do some shopping. My husband travels a LOT. In the past 3 weeks he's only been here for the weekends. It seems like we're back to long distance dating. :hehe: Before he leaves he gives me "fun money". Yesterday I treated myself to a mani pedi. But I wrecked my mani carrying in all the shopping. lol. Today I am spending the day with a new friend I made. :) She's only been in VA a little bit longer than me. She's from Egypt but has been living all over the world because her husband works for the United Nations. So we're both aliens. lol. She's like a version of one of my best friends back home so I'm very happy at having a new friend. :) Kimbear, if you lived close to us I'd drag you along! lol

hehe wait until you're married for a few years...then you will be DYING for him to go away ;) (Just kidding...sort of) But alone time is actually very nice. It's good to be independent.

Does any one have experience with window air conditioning units and how they should be supported? Since we live in an apartment, we can't screw anything to the frame of the house. The window itself is also plastic and aluminum based so we can screw and screws into wood to hold the thing in the window.

Just trying to think of a few solutions so that its safe. We are worried that the window won't support the unit and it may break the window or fall on someone below!

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

I'm surprised you guys don't hear the accents! I've been here now for two years and I hear everyone's accent, Canadians, New Yorkers, Southern accents. I hear it all. When I call home, I now hear an accent on my Mom and Dad. I also notice that Canadians do say 'eh' a lot! I never noticed it while living there, but wow it's really noticeable when you don't hear it at all and then go a place where people are always saying it. It's very endearing though, I think!

I just got back from visiting Canada and I got a few comments that I sound different. I guess I'm picking up a bit of a New York accent and I don't even realize it!

I still get teased at work though for some words! I don't mind :)

Kimbear - i hated the first time I was apart from my hubs when I first moved too, but I have to say now when we are apart for a few days, we seem to really miss eachother and afterwards we get a nice boost in our romance, haha.

hehe I suppose every one is different. I'm slightly self-centered so can't be around people all the time.

My husband also works in the restaurant industry so he works weekends and nights a lot during the week. I work days. There are times during the year that we continually miss eachother for over a week sometimes. It doesn't bother me that much.
