Hi everyone! Quick questions for all the computer savvy: do you need an anti-virus on a Mac computer? If so, which one should we get? Verizon offers one with their internet services, would it be enough?

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help!

There are very few Mac viruses..if any. No need for antivirus in my opinion.

I have a Mac for years and I don't have anti-virus software. I haven't had a problem (that I know about). I asked in the Apple store once and the guys said you don't need the software, but having it makes some people feel better. I still get a little nervous sometimes, but so far so good.

At 65, my dad just bough this first Mac (all in one) and loves it!! His friends have had them for years and most do not use any anti-virus programs! A few aid they just use a free 1 like AVG

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

LOL, i'll never understand why people buy Apple computers. They are double the price for half the specs. I guess it's the ease of use for some. I love their peripheral devices, but wouldn't buy one of their computers until they either drop the price, or improve their specs. You don't need a virus scanner if you have a mac, unless you go to certain websites. If you are into torrents at all, I would get one. Mac or not, one of the biggest vulnerabilities out there is Quicktime, an apple product.

ETA: Here is a link to a funny computer prank on someone who tried to scam someone on ebay. Not indicative of the situation here, but it is funny, and shows some of the pitfalls that are out there and the lengths that some people will go to. P-P-P-Powerbook Prank

I am perpetually buying computers. Last year, I bought a desktop and in my research, I priced out the specs that I was interested in. The Mac desktop was double the price with half the ram, a slower chipset, and a POS gfx card. Just last month, I bought a new laptop, and again, putting it up against a macbook pro, I have a faster processor, double the ram, a much better gfx card, and is $900 less. PC's aren't as easy to use as a Mac, I will concede that point. But if you are into high end computers, the mac is not going to cut it.

I have had a Mac for two years now, my oldest son is on his second in 4 years and the younger a year into his first. None of us have anti-vrius software nor have any of us ever had any problems. I love my Mac and can't imagine going back to a PC. My oldest son however, while hooking the rest of us on Macs still uses his old PC for downloading. What exactly he downloads....I don't ask ...but I do enjoy watching movies. whistling.gif

If the internet bill is in your name, you might want to pay closer attention to what he is downloading. I can only hope you don't have time warner or comcast as your ISP. If you do, I hope your son is very careful, those RIAA lawsuits are getting pretty absurd.

Nope he's still in university in Canada so it is his responsibility but he tells me he is as careful as he can be. He's pretty good about watching his limits and his sources.
