Hi Everyone,

I need advice and am not sure which forum I should post on. Here is the sitution. A month before our wedding, my husband bought a truck and got it insured using his Australian license. He got pulled over for a tail light out. The officer told him he was here for more than 10 days and was required to get a CA liceanse and gave him a ticket for not having one. Being a good to be new citizen, he immediately went to the DMV and waited three hours to get an appointment and then come back and take the test. They gave him the liceanse and told him to surrender his Australian license. (side note: when he showed up on court on the required date and waited four hours, they said the officer has not yet filed the ticket, but he gets 18 months to, so you need to check back every month, i.e. to see if it was every filed. Realllllly!)

When I went to get insurance quotes, I noticed his license expires on July 31, 2010 the day his I -94 expires. I called the DMV to ask how to extend it and they said it was not possible without approval of his adjustment of status. I explained, per the USCIS own website that this can take six months and he will have no license. I told her I have confirmation that the case is being worked on and we are trying to do everything by the book. She told me "Well, I guess you will have to chauffer him around." Any advice????

Of course, I live in San Diego, and know a few people who are here illegally and they have no problem keeping their licenses. This system is screwed up.

Thanks,

Nancy

Hey June filers, I guess I am confused, about getting my wife a social security card, I've been thru all the web pages and the automated telephone number, but I have some questions, do I need to wait and recieve my approval of my (AOS) EAD I-765 form from the government before we can apply for a SSN, reason being I tried to add my wife on my bank accounts for evidence of relationship and they told me new banking regulations means she has to have a SSN to be on my accounts (I ask them even to add her to an existing account, and they said yes) trying to amass alot of evidence that I read about here but with no joint bank account

You can apply for and get your social security card right away, we applied for ours the day after she arrived in the States. Banking info was not required whatsoever, just her Passport and Entry Visa.

Yep, she'll have to bring the certificate.

SN: I forgot where, but I read that you can only apply for a SSN as long as you have more than 2 weeks remaining on the I-94. If you have less time remaining then they will not issue you with one and you will need to wait for EAD or GC. So you should be good to go :)

In our case, they spelled her name wrong on the original ss card so when I went back to get it corrected, after we were married, they asked to see the marriage certificate.

Nancy, I don't have any advice for you, I just want to say that I feel for you guys and I agree, the system is screwed up!

Hopefully you can sort something out. Maybe an International License?
