My son has just finished his freshman year of college. I'm glad that he's going (at my urging) to a junior/community college. The tuition is 30% of a standard state university and he can fully transfer the credits to the state university when he finishes his next year of college. I mean, why pay big bucks for basic English/Science/History/Band Class/etc when you can take them at the local junior/community college for much less and then transfer? At the end of the 4 years, he'll still have a diploma that says 'State College'. I really don't understand why more students don't follow this path...but...maybe its because other parents aren't a big of a cheapskate as I am

I did the same thing and got a 3.6 gpa at the community college. Then transferred all my credits to a university. 1 semester went by and I got an email saying I was awarded $2500. Within 2 days it was in my mailbox, made out to me. It was a transfer scholarship automatically given to students that got a 3.5gpa or higher in community college (and I had no idea about it).

I wonder how many of those are available online, as many of the primary and secondary schools are starting to utilize.

I was thinking about this the other when going through piles of papers from our 9 yr. old who is finishing 3rd Grade. It would be great to see someone develop a digital tablet like device that would be durable enough for school children to use to write on. and could also give them access to whatever textbooks or library books they need right at their fingertips. Then all those textbooks publishers would be obsolete.

I saved money on college book by buying older editions. I bought 6th edition of calculus book when 7th was required by the class. To my utter surprise (sarcasm) not much changes in the world of calculus between two years. With the help of school and public library, Wikipedia, professors' office hours, classmates’ books, and various labs available, it's perfectly possible to go through the semester without the required book. One has to be determined to learn to make this work. I saved thousands by following this method.

Personally I think I learned more because of this method than I would've if I simply relied on the book and the class hours. Learning should be a passion. Only then can it be rewarding and fulfilling. Everyone gets to earn money more or less, without or with college degree.

There is nothing wrong with higher-ed, the problem is with $60K plus tuition costs after four years. Personally, I think anyone who pays over $40K for a college education has lost their mind. After all, no matter what college you attend, 1+1=2.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

That may be a tough job to pursue here. RMIT may have something available. They're probably the most legitimate university here. I seriously doubt she could pursue that degree via distance learning.
