OK, just completed my exercise (Day 1). Wanted to go for a swim after, but they haven't unlocked the pools yet. crying.gif If I had known that, I would have stayed longer at the fitness centre. Oh well, maybe I will just go back this afternoon with hubby.

Dear Diary:

Day 2 of my weight loss plan. Just weighed myself and I am 7 lbs lighter than I thought I was. 7 lbs in one day is pretty good. Looks like I can have this butter tart after all.

Nope. But, for my body type, a low-carb diet works best for losing weight. Checking your ketone levels can tell you whether a diet is working, or not. When the body starts burning fat, the liver and kidneys produce ketone bodies. If you are not burning fat, then the diet is not accomplishing what you want it to do, if reducing your percentage of body fat is what you are trying to accomplish.

How do you check your ketone levels? unsure.gif

If you are low-carbing, it is probably 7lbs of water weight. To check your ketone levels, you can buy ketostix at any pharmacy.

ah, sorry I missed the joke. But it is entirely normal to lose 7-10lbs in the first couple of days of low carbing.

10 pounds in 2 days ??? Not even Heather Mills can do that !

Actually, the current record holder is Khalid Sheik Mohammed who had a really good pee after his water boarding and lost 77.3 pounds in 7 minutes

Go to the pharmacy and ask for some Ketostyx. You just pass it through your urine, wait 15 seconds, and compare the color to the side of the bottle they come in. Walmart has the best price, like 6 or 7 dollars for 50 test strips. Your local pharmacy will charge like 10 dollars for 25 test strips.

Hey all new dieters and exercisers :star: I'm glad to see this thread was a good idea.

I agree with Alan, although I don't share his interesting choice of vocabulary :lol: We do have a serious problem in this country with food and overeating. I also think that we that try to change that deserve a lot of credit so thumbs up to all of us!

It's hard not to be hungry when watching shows like Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. :(

The vast majority of any weight loss in a crash diet is - water

A pound of fat is 3,000 calories and unless you can induce a gap of 3,000 calories, you will not lose a pound of fat and it will ALL be water (+some muscle) and therefore replacable in minutes.

That guy who hauled a huge quarter ton sledge across the snow for 12 hours a day on his way to the north pole was using 9,000 calories per day and if he hadn't eaten ANYTHING, he would lose 3 lbs per day. The rest is water.

Self delusion is THE enemy in weight loss as it results in disappointment and giving up further down the line.

Electric fires burn a lot of electricity but electric motors don't use much. Producing heat (just living) will burn a lot of calories and moving about will burn less. Throttling back the calorie intake will do it but a weekly weigh will indicate the direction of the strategy whereas a daily weigh will just reveal gut content/water changes and will lead to either :

A I am doing great, where's that bun - or:

B I am failing anyway and I want to cry - so give me that bun

So it has to be a slow patient process concentrating on maintaining morale - this can only be done by being realistic and not engaging in self delusion and quick fixes

Thanks for the advice! I've used them before, but I usually do it once and forget about it. How often do you use them? Daily?

I worked out 25 minutes last night on the stationary bike and the recumbent(?) stationary bike. I'm going to try to increase my time more every few days until I get back to 60 minutes. After three days of working out I am already telling myself there is an improvement. :D Don't know if it's true, but it could be!!

Then my mom and son decided they wanted to go to the buffet. I did turn down SOME things, but kept up with my cake habit. The more I workout and see results the easier it is to turn down the food I love. Though, I find if I limit myself too much in regards to food I am starving and turn into a total b!tch.

I quit drinking soda (real Coke is my favorite!) a couple weeks ago, now I need to give the axe to beer. I like to have 1 drink every night. Maybe vodka and cranberry juice would be a healthier replacement for beer. Anyone else have the problem of getting too many calories from alcohol? I tell myself it's ok because Guinness only has 80 calories a bottle, but I know it makes a big difference in regards to tummy and love handles. :devil:

How is it going for people on the structured diets? I have never been able to follow them as I am allergic to or just can't bring myself to eat a lot of the food they list. Lots of respect to you if you are on them!
