one lb of blubber = a 3,000 calorie deficit

One would have to run miles and miles to get rid of one coca cola and the damage to one's knees and other joints makes it dangerous - especially if one is over weight...

Nope, the cake hole is the culprit and some of the folk I see lumbering up my canal path here every day for months confirms that.

Kill the calories in. Keeping a body at 98.6 degrees F uses a lot of calories so simply breathing will do it without the tarzan stuff

The cake hole is the guilty party

I've also quit smoking this week. Yep! I took it up again for a year, and now that my mega-drama is nearly complete, I feel it's time. I had one on Saturday night, before that I had one on Thursday at 11pm. Not too shabby. I'm hoping to give myself a month or so to improve my lung capacity and then get back to running, which I was really getting into before my life went tits up last year.

tits up is the approved position in the bible belt

Tough love works when you first love the person you're dishing it to. All I'm seeing in these posts is disgust.

We ALL acknowledge that poor diet is a huge factor. This thread isn't about getting us to "see the light" but to support each other in our goals.

Do you have a goal to share or a shortcoming to confess to, or are you just here to rip on those who do?

I DID go to the air conditioned gym this morning before work today, so I'll join you on the two week challenge. Are there any specific requirements? I like doing stuff on the stationary machines because I can read a book and make the time go faster. Harder to do that if there's strength training involved. ;)

Perfect!! I don't know how you can read a book, I bounce too much. My gym has 'cardio cinema'. I get to watch a movie in the dark and noone sees anything they shouldn't! I figure putting on the short shorts, sports bra and then getting there is half the battle.

My husband wants a Slam Man for his upper body workouts. Our place is a little small, but I am actively looking for one. Even used is great since they seemed to have discontinued them in the US and continue to sell in the UK. If I have to import one I am not going to be happy.

Our VisaJourney started July 2009 when I mailed the 129-F

Fiance here February 2010, married 10 days later

GC received in the mail 10-Jun-2010

Able to apply to remove conditions 12-Feb-2012

You do know this is Alan we're dealing with here? You need to read everything through the larking about filter. I'm a bit of a lardazz myself and I take no offence at what are clearly japes.

Wow, I wish my gym had that!

The cardio cinema sounds like a great idea - The Wii fit has a similar option, you just do the step thing for 30 minutes and can change the channel on the TV, but even with the step which makes it ~6-7" instead of the 2 or 3 of the base board doesn't work me out very well. However, if it's a difference between sitting and watching Hulu or moving, I figure it's in the right direction.

I have found him to be quite witty on many other subjects. I don't appear to have a larking about filter on this subject. I guess if I don't find one or he doesn't tone it down, I'll simply exit the thread. That is how it works, I know. If you don't like it, just choose not to read it. Ah well.

I am dishing it to all of us including myself. All this pussyfooting around the subject won't do it coz this is war. Rage against the flab.

We need to adopt a military stance against this thing otherwise we will retreat in the face of adversity (or ice cream as it is known)

This isn't easy, so some spine, some backbone is required. The others on this thread won't be around when that apple pie comes at us so we need SELF discipline as there will be nobody there to support us when we are in the front line and that big mac cheeseburger comes at us with bayonet fixed. Coming on here and saying we have put 3 ounces on and would somebody please give me a warm fuzzy and say 'it's alright honey you can do this' simply won't hack it.

I am sharing an approach to it which is at least as valid as the other methods. I saw my buddy stop smoking. He said 'This is the last cig I will ever smoke'. He smoked it and put the dog end on a ledge on the top of the bar and never smoked again.

So there is no monopoly on methods and I think that some exercise programs are counter productive because they give the participant the idea they have done their bit today and are entitled to swing the fridge door open.

Swimming can make you ravenous. Go and burn 900 calories swimming and you wont stop troughing until 1500 have gone past your clacker

Come on Heather and stick with it - I am not that scary. I am not getting at you or anyone specifically. It's a program for US including me and we need a jolt if we are going to get anywhere.

It's a form of encouragement - but it's encouragement to get serious and not to simply try.

Yes Elmo is right and I am trying to say it in a jocular manner. You were here before me and if you think I am too much for you, and you need the thread to be gentle for your program, then I will retire. Just say the word.

Anyone else that hasn't been exercising want to join on the 2 week challenge?

I'm in. I have been exercising but not as often as I should. I'd like to do "something" every day, even if it's just a short walk. I usually fail on Fridays (Happy hour is more fun than the gym) and on Sundays (waking up at noon with a hangover doesn't exactly make me want to rush off to the gym). I think I should be able to put in at least a 20 min walk those days which would make me feel better. Was doing well today though so I'm off to a good start this week. :)

Having thought about it on the drive home, I agree with you on some points - the get serious part. I certainly don't want to come on here and confess to you that I've gone and eaten a big slice of apple pie!

I guess what got me was the idea of people around every corner watching me try too hard and thinking about my lard/blubber and how I was "lumbering" around. I will try to take it as encouragement...Maybe it will be easier knowing it is meant that way at least. I think I knew that, but got too emotional about it anyway.

I don't know if you read the article, Alan, but Time Magazine completely agrees with you, and has a very long article saying exactly that.

Excellent - you are a winner ! You have the logic and you need that. I am a cocky narcissist as well as being a bit overweight so when I shoot insults at myself, I don't even feel it. I sometimes forget that other people are listening and everyone isn't like me.

My daughter is trying to stop smoking she says - but I don't think she is getting to base 1. She clutches these pills that are supposed to make you feel sick - and now the sight of the pills is enough to make her sick. I suppose everyone is diffrent and some CAN do it slowly and some can do it instantly and it's hard to know which camp we are in. I got worried about one of the women at work as she was far too thin - like an Apache's horse.. I asked her about it and she said she forgets to eat when she is working hard. I know I am like that and I can do without when I am engrossed. I eat when I am bored and I don't need it. Some address that by eating carrots or something and some do it by keeping busy.

I have been busy today so I got through with 2 biscuits for brekky and a banana sandwich for lunch. I could eat a scabby camel at the moment but I will try and hold the line.

I have seen so many people try to do it with exercise and give themselves too much pain to continue. I have done exercise myself and then had fish and chips twice and two pints of beer after coz I was starving. So my two penneth is gentle walks ok but we all secretly know where it's coming from. Trees can get carbon from the air and get to be 500 tons but every ounce of us has gone in through our mouths so we have to start from there..

Anyway that's my theory so I will have a go at it and report back if I don't die of low blood sugar in the process.

Heck me and Time magazine eh ? Well these things are circular so any theory has to accord with the mags if we wait long enough.

My cats just eat cat biscuits and they are slim jims - but there is no way !
