Turkish daily runs photos of bloodied Israeli soldiers

A mass-circulation Turkish newspaper today published photos of bloodied Israeli commandos being overpowered by activists aboard an aid ship targeted in a deadly Israeli raid.

The Hurriyet newspaper said the pictures had been recovered from an “empty” memory card obtained from an activist from the Foundation of Humanitarian Relief (IHH), a Turkish Islamist charity that spearheaded the aid campaign.

Seized the cameras

The daily said the Israeli forces had seized the cameras of the activists and journalists on board the Turkish ferry Mavi Marmara, and erased their memory cards after Monday’s raid which left nine Turks dead. One of the photos, published on the front page, shows an Israeli soldier holding the back of his head with one hand, with blood on his face and the front of his shirt torn open.

Another shows the same soldier holding his nose, blood running down from a head wound, being led down stairs by an activist, as a cameraman nearby records the incident.

The newspaper also published pictures of a commando falling down the stairs and another being assisted by medics aboard the ferry.

In another shot, two activists are shown waiting behind a door with metal rods in their hands. Mavi Marmara was the lead ship in a flottilla of six ships that aimed to break the blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Mr Bulent Yildirim, the head of the IHH, has charged that Israeli soldiers indiscriminately killed those on board, but also acknowledged that the activists attacked the commandos with iron bars “in self defence”.

A US war veteran who was aboard the ferry also said he was among the activists who overpowered three Israeli soldiers. “They (the soldiers) looked at us... They thought we would kill them, but we let them go,” Kenneth Nichols O’Keefe was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying Friday after he flew from Tel Aviv to Istanbul. Mr O’Keefe, a veteran from the 1991 Gulf War, added that he took the weapon of one of the soldiers and emptied it, according to the report. Israeli officials say the soldiers responded only after they were attacked by the activists. (AFP)
