Translators at the interview

Does anyone know for sure if the embassy doing the interview must supply a translator for the interview? There is a member here that his partner does not speak very good Vietnamese, because she speaks a different language, and he is worried about her misunderstanding questions being asked. It is my understanding that the embassy must accommodate for such things, and if a translator is not available at the embassy would this allow the interviewed person to have her own translator present? Her first language is Khmay and her English is still a bit shaky. I think if he contacts them prior to the interview that this would be the thing to do allowing them time to get a translator there for the interview and also give them a heads up, but as I said I am not sure and want to know if anyone that has gone through HCMC has had any issues that relate to this and can offer more insight. When they send the pkt 3 response to the consulate they should include a document explaining the Khmay translator requirement so the consulate can be prepared.

Bryon's wife had a similar circumstance as VN was not her first language. Try contacting him.

I'd urge the person looking for the information to contact the consulate directly. I'd imagine that they aren't required to provide translators for any possible language.

If the person is local they could go to the consulate and ask.

I'm not aware of any part of the immigration law that requires the consulate to make a translator available, or requires them to accept a translator who isn't an employee of the consulate. I also couldn't find any guidance in the Foreign Affairs Manual on this. I know that USCIS has policies in the Adjudicator's Field Manual regarding 3rd party translators, but I can't find any firm policies for the Department of State.

It seems like asking the consulate is the best way to get an answer on this.
