Now that I have filed, I was wondering about the support. My parents are willing to be co-sponsor, and I would like to avoid that.

I have had steady employment since graduating college, but I was a volunteer abroad for two years, so my tax returns register nil on the money front for those two years, and I have worked since I've been back, that amount was above the poverty level. However, I am going to be an elementary teacher with a good salary. I have heard cases where having a letter and pay stubs is enough to prove that one can support the family.

What are other's experiences?

You should not need any prior tax returns for your interview. Most embassies accept the I-134.

Check here for the embassy you will use and see what their requirements are.

list of embassies

The I-134 has specific instructions as to what is acceptable. You only need tax returns if you dont have proper proof of employment

Now when you get to AOS stage it is different but by then you probably will have filed tax returns for 2006 so problem is solved.

I believe it depends upon which embassy will be conducting the interview on what is needed to accompany the I-134 form. In my case, the Manila embassy does want to look at the most recent tax return. Maybe checking the individual embassy's web site will give you more detailed information about what is required.

Wow, I just checked their site and it (I was going to say *sucks*, but it's too strong)... is really bad. No info there about K-1 and I couldn't find an e-mail address either. I just found their address, phone and fax numbers.

14, rue Rainitovo - Antsahavola - Antananarivo 101

Tél,: 261 20 22 212 57/ 212 73/209 56 Fax: 261 20 22 345 39

The best thing to do would be contacting them and ask them what kind of documents they're looking for.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

Abril,

One needs to have sufficient and sustainable current income to sponsor an alien for a K visa. (And afterwards for adjustment of status.) For many people recent income tax returns are an excellent indication that their current income is sustainable, but in your case past income tax returns are not helpful so you will have to rely on other indicators.

You don't mention how long you've been working in your current position - and you refer to your earnings in the past tense? And you talk about being a teacher in the future tense? This seems to leave a lot of possibly important information missing.

Being a teacher would probably be excellent on the issue of sustainability if one has tenure, but possibly just the opposite if one does not.
