I don't have it

I can't believe! It's only the usual admission stamp written CR1 on the bottom and nothing else!

Damn it!!!!!!!!!!

They also didn't tell me anything about renewing the GC bla bla bla. The guy only asked me to sign the paper and said I was all set.

So I guess I can't leave the country till I receive the GC?

ps- I googled the I-551 stamp and this is what it shows... I really don't have it.

i-551.jpg

that admission stamp is very outdated.

This is what my admission stamp was when I entered in 08. And yes, it is the "right" one

Yeah, because we just moved, it'll be a while before I can locate our USCIS forms. That's why I was asking if the A# is printed on your visa which it sounds like it is. The Registration Number. That would make sense as the A# is the Alien Registration Number.

Yeah, that's what mine looks like. I have one regular admission stamp. I have another one with CR1 and May 19, 2012 written on it. And the red three-line stamp.

That's great, Rian. I already have a card and number and I'm just looking to update it. Frankly, I can't remember what I marked on the DS230.

Well, I searched the USCIS, DOS site. Couldn't find anything on "how to read an Immigrant Visa"--it's always nice to take 'official proof' when dealing with departmental bureaucracy. The folks at the SS office were being jerks about it yesterday (I got a lot of "this is just how we do things, Ma'am." Frankly, I'm not sure if they can tell their heads from their butts) and I am not sure if they'll believe me just because 'I say it is so.'

Well, all I can say that the Registration Number in your visa IS the A-Number. Not sure what else I can tell you.. if you don't believe me then you could call USCIS? They will tell you the same thing.

Who cares if SS believes you or not. Just ask them to do their job by entering the number into the system. If they refuse to do so then ask for a supervisor, or a different officer. Yes there are dummies there but there are also people who know what is going on.

yes, I have that new admission stamp, what I don't have the I-551 that shows on that picture.

Anyway, I think I'll just wait the GC and then go to SS office to get my number updated.

I had no issues updating my SSN (from J1 SSN then 6 years ago). All it took was my passport and marriage certificate. Yes, the A# is the registration number, they just have to punch it into the system.

Certainly did not wait 2 weeks or more - did it on the 2nd day of arrival. This even after I marked the SSN number box on DS230 as no and the consulate people changed it to yes even though I had the number from before.

Your A# is your Registration Number on your CR-1 visa. It should be directly under your IV Case Number on the same visa. I hope this is resolved for you soon. I'm still waiting on my GC. They just had to switch the design of it.

I am also still waiting for my wife's welcome letter and SSN card. We went to the SSN office last week but were told to come back after 3 weeks of POE. If I don't receive the SSN card by next Friday we will go to the SSN office and apply for one directly.
