Massachusetts Lawmaker Involved in Accident With Illegal Alien

The recently passed Arizona immigration law has set off an immigration debate across the country. In one unlikely state, the debate has literally hit home. Massachusetts lawmaker Mike Moran was recently rear-ended by a suspected illegal alien. The suspect hit Representative Moran's car going 60 mph, while under the influence of alcohol and reportedly wearing a traditional Mexican costume. According to the Massachusetts State Police, the suspect failed a field sobriety test and when questioned about the incident, he responded, "I plan to go back to my country, Mexico; nothing is going to happen to me, man." (<A href="http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/local/BO143104/">NBC WHDH, May 26, 2010).

I posted this a few days ago, but it's all good.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Could not have happened to a nicer guy.

As much as you may believe that illegal immigration needs to end (like I do), posting a single incident about a bad apple in no way can be used to make an argument that 12 million people are bad people; I have seen this argument made too many times. The facts show that illegal immigrants actually commit fewer crimes (if you take out their illegality I suppose) than the general US populace. I personally have known multiple people killed by white US citizens who were under the influence. Does this make all white US citizens bad people? Sure, there are plenty of false statics out there that say something like 90 percent of people in Los Angeles County or illegal, but they are false statics. Articles like this are meant to get at emotions and little else.

If you want to get into emotions, watch this video.

Now, please don't accuse me of being in favor of illegal immigration. Illegal immigration needs to end because it just is not right to have a subclass group of people, among many other factors.

You can usually add no Insurance and no Drivers License. (Probably applicable in this case)

I just like it when these people get hoisted by their own petard.

Emotions? Don't see your point, or the point on this video. How much is the cost to the US tax payer for the 48 fights a week?

I watched the video, I also do not see the emotions reference. It was rorm a biased source but still showed ICE in a very good light.

I know what sort of treatment the Mexican authorities dish out, Guatamala was mentioned as well, have not been there.

Couldn't agree more. Calderon needs to be quiet until Mexico at least treats their illegal immigrants half as good as we do. ICE generally does a very good job, that was not my point.

My point is that you can pick individual cases, like a drunk driver or an 18 year old kid who came to the US as an infant and knows no other place other than the US, but these cases in no way should have much bearing on the overall reform effort. They are emotional in that by watching or hearing about them, they make you made or whatever, but are in no way representative of the issue.

Now, I do support the Dream Act, but that is a different subject.

A liberal is a conservative that hasn't been mugged yet.

In this case hit by a drunk illegal alien.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Not all illegal immigrants are bad people but they shouldn't be here illegally it's that simple. It's ridiculous to make the excuse that since Americans commit crimes, crimes by illegal immigrants should largely excused. Do I have the right to kill, maim or steal in Latin America because Americans haven't gotten their quota there yet?

One nasty crime commmitted by one person who shouldn't be here illegally in the first place is one crime too many. BTW, the kids of illegal immigrants born here are Americans and commit crimes at higher rates than their parents just like other Americans.

Or an 18 year old kid who came to the US as an adult and knows no other place other than the country he came from?

What's the difference?
