And I haven't read a thing that says he wants to reward those who have come here illegally. What he is saying is for those who aren't highly skilled or don't have a family connection, the US (at present) has no legal path for their immigration.

Sorry if I'm being thick here, but isn't that what the case actually is?

Hrmm, so basically, the premise is, there's no legal path to get here, so just ignore that and take what you want anyways.

I should use this logic on my banking.

You might want to. See if it works as well for you as it does for the migrant workers.

No you're not being thick. But you know about the system because you've been in it.

The subject article talks about how US immigration has no legal path for unskilled workers. It also talks about people who think illegals have "jumped the line". Neither (I would daresay) are things most of the US population has any clue about. It's my opinion that most Americans think illegals are lawbreakers just because they have the physical ability to swim across the Rio Grande.

Make sense?

There are also those who are illegally here due to overstays for decades, then get everything put right simply by marrying a USC.

They are just as illegal imo.

They are out of status until the adjustment is granted. There's no doubt of that.

Maybe I have an odd way of viewing the entire system. As a pinko-commie-socialist-ideaologue, I'd really love to believe open borders would work. But, I know they don't.

I believe US immigration is too restrictive. I believe if there were a legal way for the unskilled to come here more freely, there would be less of a different kind of abuse of our system. And that is abuse of the family-based path to life in the US.

The difference being that they lawfully entered the US.

They account for something like 40% (going strictly from memory so feel free to google it) of those who are among the ranks called illegal.

I believe that if open borders people have fences around their homes and locks on their doors, they're being too restrictive and are responsible for all the abuse of those who just want to be able to park here without papers. If only illegal lovers would open their homes, their cars and other resources to those who don't care to prepare to go through the system, there would be less abuse and the rest of us wouldn't have to pay for their lawbreakers.

there is no "right" to immigrate to the US no matter what the skill level. the US can also decide who gets offered the privilege to immigrate and can restrict immigration as many other countries currently do.

many people have a problem with this since the US used to welcome everyone. those days are long over ... and today people can't accept the change due to a perception of past practices that are no longer good for the country. immigration is not a right ... yet these people think it is ....

I'm fairly certain I never stated any form of immigration is a right.

I keep reading Stephen saying that unskilled laborers should be allowed "if there is a need". So I don't think he's for uncontrolled immigration.

And I haven't read a thing that says he wants to reward those who have come here illegally. What he is saying is for those who aren't highly skilled or don't have a family connection, the US (at present) has no legal path for their immigration.

johnny you've obviously been out on adventures for the last 3-4 years & not here in the OT. if you'd been home during that period it would have been made clear to you long ago. rewarding illegal immigrants with a blanket amnesty is exactly what he wants. stay in town a few days, you'll get caught up to speed.

While I never said the US should shut its border, many seem to forget this is not the 1700s or 1800s; that is, a time when the US had under 50 million people. The country now has 310 million and projected to reach 500 million in few decades. American cannot possibly have nor needs an anything-goes immigration policy. The biggest irony is that mass immigration goes against [contradicts] the environmental policies libs stand for. It goes against trying to help those Americans currently living in poverty or even support workers rights and so forth.

Coming from a country where 1 in 4 citizens [in 2010] was actually born abroad, I just have to laugh. Yes actually born abroad (like my parents), rather than some my great great yada yada story. So any assumption that someone like myself, an immigrant too, is somehow against immigration is ludicrous by any stretch. What I stand for is responsible immigration for the country before it ends up some stereotypical overpopulated third world country.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Having said that, the people I know who would take an unskilled worker visa if it were available would be willing to collect shopping carts in the Walmart parking lot even though they are engineers or doctors in their own countries. They wouldn't turn their noses up at any job, and for that I'd rather have them as my neighbor, fellow American, employee than many Americans.

That's exactly the sort of mentality I was talking about earlier. If you're a doctor or a lawyer in your home country but are still willing to take a job as an unskilled worker to push shopping carts in Walmart, doesn't that translate to a "I just really want to be here/ I just want to better my life/ I like getting paid $7.00 per hour" visa?

And again, being hard-working or more committed than certain Americans is not a visa qualification neither does it entitle you to one, but I believe we settled that earlier.
